Final Project for Digital Grid Course

This was a final. I waited a bit late to finish it, but it went smoothly since I already had the layout and concept.

I decided to do (RED) organization for several reasons. The main one is because I believe and support their cause. Another was because I had a ream of red paper I bought at XPedx for super cheap and I was waiting to use it on something snazzy.

Project Brief:
• Must be done with a minimum of 10 pages.
• Only two PMS colors and/or duotone images. I chose PMS 185 & PMS 872.
• Layout design was open. I decided to do it 11 x 8.5 (which is landscape size of a letter sheet) all in individual sheets with Perfect-bound binding.
• Program - Adobe InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop
• Typefaces - News Gothic Std & Helvetica (Body Copy)
• Texture/Vectors - None except paper scan for cover

My idea was ultra clean with no textures (or minimum textures) and no vector images. When you see a red page, its because it is to be printed on red paper. I will upload actual images of it soon.

I did the binding myself. A small perfect-bound book. I found an easy tutorial for book binding at this [link]

I was really happy with the results though my printer gave me a bit of issues here and there. It's the first project I print at home using my Epson 13 x19 printer. The paper I bought at Walmart for around $7. It's a cheap brand of Matte Photo Paper.

Hope all that info helps somehow! Visit (RED) at www.joinred.com and support their cause to help victims of AIDS in Africa. Read up on how Bono started this amazing movement.

i really like the design, layout, and all that good stuff. I love it. But one issue i see is that green-ish color text on the red really vibrates a lot and is pretty uncomfortable to look at. Maybe it's my monitor, but I would definitely look for another color there. Those web addresses are acting as your headline, and when they visually vibrate like that, they almost discouraged me from looking at the spreads. (I wouldn't have in any other case, but I know you're a really good designer)

yep. I see what you're saying. You know, this "mock" is almost deceiving. That PMS 872 gold you're referring too, actually printed on the red paper like a very dark red. It only printed gold on the white paper. So, yes, I had to choose two PMS colors. In reality, the way it looks there, doesn't look anything at all as it should (the gold on red, I mean). But yeh, thanks for the input! You are absolutely right. and thanks for the nice words

ha. dude, I appreciate that. you're making my head big. lol

Here's how I did it:
-I chose (RED)
-Prayed for diving guidance
-looked up stuff
-put it together leaving lots of whitespace
-bam, done.
-the end

hope that helps. hehe.

The white parts are very good, great choice of typo and color. But the color of the typo on the red background color are not good. I think a white font looks better there.

hey thanks for the advance critique. much appreciated.

In regards to the color in red, it'b quite impossible to do it in white since the paper was already a dark red. And plus, like I wrote below, I was forced to use a duotone, 2 PMS colors. I chose 185 and 872 for color harmony. Maybe it makes sense now.

Love the design. I would've chosen black instead of brown as my second PMS color, however. I think the whole design would turn out a bit more bold that way.

I work at Gap and I'm proud to say we donate the largest percentage of our profits on product red items (50%) to the global fund. We, along with the other product red partners, have already raised over $50 million to help fight AIDS in Africa. People can vote with their dollars and help put an end to this disease.

angelaacevedo In reply to Maverick18x [2008-03-21 01:53:24 +0000 UTC]

Yea. I wasn't allowed to use black or gray. Had to be other PMS colors. So that gold 872 worked for me.

And yes, GAP definitely is the best contributer with the best RED apparel, might I add.
