Description My attempt of a digital painting, something I don't really do. Wanted to experiment and see if I could replicate the lighting and mood of the scene. Really pleased how it came out. I was going for something quick to get the colours right but then developed it abit more....didn't really try to get it looking like the actor, again, mainly aiming for matching the colour.

I like the lighting, and I think you have a good color palate that holds the mood of LOTR well. I can tell its Aragorn, but there are a few things I think you can do to help enhance the overall effect.
I like the white of the eyes, because it makes contrast, however, I think the eye on the left is a smidge big. The difference in size sits on the edge of looking on purpose and being on accident. I would also like to see more hard edged brushes, especially on his nose. Using the harder edged brush can add to the illustration on the sword hilt and his clothing, further advancing him and receding the background. The bridge down the nose seems a little wide near the middle and bottom. I think if you bring the shadow shape from the right side of his face more to the left toward the ridge of his nose that will solidify the shape of his nose. (looking at posters and such his nose is soft, but it has a little bit of angularity that keeps it from looking mushy.) Hope this helps e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Thanks very much. Yeh, I see what you mean with the eye size and the bridge of the nose. The eyes were just laziness on my part, and the nose i guess i wasnt thinking enough. I couldnt see clear definition in the reference pic, but it looked weird in my painting so I tried to add a little to it, and I can see how it is wide now.

I did it all with a soft opaque brush. but thanks for the suggestion. Didnt think of changing to a harder edge brush more solid structures, so I'll try to remember that for next time.

Thanks for the crit.

You know, for being a first attempt at this sort of thing, it's all kinds of awesome. The nose is a little off, but you said you weren't going for that.

Job well done, I say!

thanks very much man. yeh, likeliness is off. i was going to just rough out the face, but thought i would tidy it up more as the rest looked better, but by then, proportions were off.

Great picture! I have no idea how you do 'digital painting' but it looks really good - fantastic use of colours and you get a sense of depth to it without using outlines! Nice one!

Thanks very much buddy. To be honest, i dont have a clue on this whole digital painting thing either. Is it another way of saying 'colouring', but doing it really slowly?

johnsonx [2009-10-22 12:09:47 +0000 UTC]

nice job on this,i like the colours and mood, warm and cool.only crit really is perhaps to use more sharp edged brushes to get more definition on some of the forms,+maybe add some texture to the sword in the foreground or his face ,depending on what the focal point is,gd work tho,how u keeping?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelCrusher In reply to johnsonx [2009-10-22 13:59:38 +0000 UTC]

haha, didnt recognize you at first mr.x. Thanks for the crit. I'll have to have a look into using the harder edged brushes, i wasnt sure if it would look weird and stand out too much with the opacity down, making it look streaky, but i understand the idea of mixing it up the definte edges and even texture of objects.

I'm good man, just been taking a breather and relaxing. Trying my hand at different things like this and plan on learning the shit out of flash. One day.

How goes things in the studio? Has it gone pretty quiet now? Keeping you busy?

thats awesome, especially considering it's not your usual thing, eyes need a bit of work but apart from that I love the colours and lighting effects, very nice

thanks very much. Yeh, a few people have mentioned the eyes. I am just glad i have managed to get the colours and feeling of the piece done, thats what my aim was. I am iffy with people's likeliness just by drawing, so i didnt expect to get that right doing digital work.

The eyes seem a little bright but other then that it's a good likeness.

BTW I'm watching that scene at the moment.

lol funny coincidence. Yeh, I slipped up with those eyes. Just did a default white eyes like usual, didnt really think about playing with colour on them.

Bug-Off [2009-10-14 01:52:20 +0000 UTC]

That's some good work. I assume you worked from a screen capture?

Lots of deep shadow and light mixed together. No real sharp edges, so it all has a rather loose feeling to it. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. You do capture the feeling of his character well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelCrusher In reply to Bug-Off [2009-10-14 14:43:05 +0000 UTC]

thanks man, yeh, worked from a movie still i found on google. Just wanted to try capturing those colours and experiment.

I only know how to paint with soft edges...so far. I can see how harder edges adding more definition could have helped in some areas, so thats what I will look into next.

It's the same with most things. People expect you to do what's related to what you want to do, not what you want to do itself. "So you're an animator, that's good. Can you paint?" "So you're a comedian, that's very nice. Can you act?" "So you're a vet, can you train wolverines?"

i bet you could if you tried, heck, i did it. i never spend ages colouring images, so this was a change for me actually looking at what I was doing. Working on another piece which i hate already. Too much white...i cant colour white for shit.

oh, thanks for the comment though.

Thanks very much. lol Yeh, not what you'd expect with me, but I think I gotta try things like this to challenge myself and try to get better at things that I just dont have alot of experience with.

Gonna try working on a few more paintings, if anything, just to build up skills and something for my portfolio.

if you used the smudge tool, I have to slap you silly!
but the mood of the colors from the original is pretty close.
if youre drawing a face though you should pay a bit more attention to the construction of it ( know you didnt try making him look that similar, but just saying, hehe )

keep it up man ^^ color practice is allways good!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelCrusher In reply to ShikaruOC [2009-10-13 21:17:59 +0000 UTC]

lol I did use the smudge tool...is that a no-no? I'm all new to digital painting...so I am using a soft brush as 20% opacity and smudging anything that doesnt look smooth enough.

Thanks though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShikaruOC In reply to AngelCrusher [2009-10-14 13:39:52 +0000 UTC]

hehe yeah the burn and smudge tool is a big no no with digital painting
a good thing to do is to play around with opacity and flow as you go along. I like to think of it as if I would paint on a real canvas.
Allso not everything has to be smooth ^^ hehe you can do a lot of different "textures" with just your brush.

AngelCrusher In reply to ShikaruOC [2009-10-14 14:28:13 +0000 UTC]
