Description For sale at my Etsy - [link]

Another fun custom build from the customer who requested the Sun Prince and Naamah masks . She wanted something that had the feel of the winged Thor helm of Marvel Comic's repute without looking too incredibly similar.

I've never done riveting in this fashion before. Bashed a few fingers and messed up a few times before finally getting it right! I have to say I love the look and will definitely be using rivets more now!

This mask has 3 layers of 7 oz leather riveted and glued in key spots. Dyed, painted with acrylics, then varnished. It's held on with elastic bands, which have been threaded through a panel of the wings in the back.

Nice, what paint did you use to achieve the metallic effect? It's quite convincing.

I used Liquitex heavy body acrylics metallic silver and antique gold, which have a lovely sheen to them. Β  I have a tutorial about making that buffed metal effect here, if it helps:Β angelasasser-artisan.deviantar...

Enjoy!

Awesome. Good luck! Β It's a great effect I enjoy doing, especially as I don't have an airbrush, so this ends up being a little easier to do for me with fingerpainting.

Out of curiosity, what all is involved in leather mask making? I've only been leather crafting for a little over a year now, and most of my stuff is western style. Needless to say, I'm interested in learning new techniques and processes.

Thanks,

I have a video tutorial of my process up on YouTube, if you'd like to see how I do it. Β Others have their own techniques but that'st he way I work. Β I'm also still a novice, doing this for only 3 years or so, which means I have much to learn myself!

At any rate, here's a link:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MGYXK…

Thanks for the video link, definitely like the shaping techniques. Going to have to try it.Β  I've only been at this a little over a year myself, so you've got a bit more experience on me Needless to say, I'll take all the help and knowledge I can.

Thanks again.

It kiiiinda lacks nose this one but it was a requested artpiece so i'm sure it's not entirely your design. of course you made it but is it your idea entirely?

Angelic-Artisan In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-06 04:36:35 +0000 UTC]

I'd say the idea/design is mine, as the only prompts were to make it a winged Thor mask (with Marvel's Thor as a basis). I can definitely see a nose guard working with this, but I had to work within budget, so couldn't get TOO extravagant with adding pieces. I already added a little more detail than was really paid for in this. That always happens with my custom jobs. Especially when they're fun!

Oh man this is so freaking fantastic my dear! Totally has that mythic feel, and I agree about the rivets - they look so cool!

I really do need to get better about using rivets. They are so damned hard to line up for hammering! But man are they SEXY.

The buffed metal effect is SO incredibly easy to do too. It's amazing how far a little finger painting takes you! I did a little tut for it here, if you're curious: [link]
