Description I've been down lately and this is my first expressive piece, which cost me more than coloured pencils.
During the colouring process, I broke down and cried. Two guys were playing ignorant games and ran into me while I was trying to get what I was feeling out. I looked at the dark line streaked across the old womans face and couldnt help but bite my hand to keep from losing myself. (if anyones dealt with Primacolor.. you know its virtually impossible to erase)
But I've learned something. Art is like life in more ways than I realised. We are all taking it for granted and dont recognize the precious gift we were given until your heart and soul are smashed through espression. I was lucky enough to realise that easier than some might, like this woman and her children.
If my depression continues.. I might look like this when I'm 30 or so... or at least my soul would.

I just did a project for school on this artist. I really love her work, and I found out that some things look better in black & white. awsome drawing!!!

wow... i was just talking to a friend about the photographer that did a piece very much like this (was it your reference?)

and i do like the colors you used... it keeps the same effectiveness that the black and white photo did.

wow... and there it in the comment at the bottom here... duh

That's really impressive stuff, I love it. It reminds me of a piece I saw done in glass once. I can't remember the name or artist, someone just told me a story about it. When it was being transported, somebody dropped this priceless work (though I didn't really like it). When the artist heard he was delighted and said that it was finally finished. I guess it goes to show that art cannot always be so perfectly planned. a human aspect is a blessing.

i can see the emotion. the shading and the form needs serious work. read a few art books before posting something like this again. (just repaying your comment)

embrace this sad time in your life.. it comes in waves.. try to remember that the future holds incredible bliss to oppose the incredible pain you feel this moment

I remember that photograph! *points* You did a nice job drawing it, and what impress me most is that you really felt the feeling protraited in it. ^^ Awwww~ I hope your depression will ware off... I like your concept in art, and I agree with you... To me, art is an impression of life. ^_^ Hey... maybe I should change that to my personal quote.

Hats off to you on such a powerful piece. I can really feel the emotion put into this piece. It is funny how we can take our god given (if you believe in one ) gifts for granted and don't realize it til it's too late.

wow.. this is amazing... probably your best work yet. looks so real, and blue was a good choice of colors to use... gives it a kinda melancholy feel.

good description too just wish you weren't depressed =/

WOAH! I haven't seen any works from the artist that took the original photograph....but you sure made a fantastic job here.....drawing something from a photograph and give it the same artistic value as well as the same feeling is a tough job!

can use only two words...TRULY IMPRESSIVE

Welcome to the wonderful world of expressionism. You have undone me sweetie. Go and check out Kathie Kolwitz, you'll like her stuff....expressionism is my heart and soul and I cannot believe how wonderful you have captured this picture (I do not mean technically either)....realism is hard because of the technical issues....expressionism is hard because of the soul issues...all I can say is I am mystified.

I tried to comment on this once already but it didn't work. This is very good. I love the way you used color to express the mood. And you've done a good job of capturing the look of despair in the woman's face. Great job!

Ack! I did some faces in the last part of my description and it must have taken out my credits... and didnt realise it was gone until comments came in. And now its not letting me edit the data.. so I'll do it here. Thanks for letting me know guys!

Ok.. I had like.. 2 paragraphs about Dorothea Lange and credits to her for this picture and many other of the depression era.. so I'm not going to go into total detail.

Dorothea Lange was paid by cities and councils (I believe) to go around and capture the effects the Depression in the 1930's have caused. She happened upon the migrant mother and her children and took the photo. I found it in my history book and -recaptured- the feeling in blue for the sake of depression instead of the normal graphite you're all so used to by now.
The photo that was reference to this is © Dorothea Lange, 1935.

Nice work but you should give credits of the original photo.
It's "Homeless mother" (guess that its called like that in english)
by Dorothea Lange ,1936
One of my favorite photos.
