Description
This is Mates (dont read like "meits" but like "mahtaes", or put mates in google translator and listen it in czech language). Its a czech version of name Matthias or Mathew. Meaning of the name is "God's gift" which i didnt even know till now. I dont believe in god but i hope he will be the special eatvim searching for since ive lost my beloved boy monchichi...
And how i got this little baby? Since i started working in a pet store, i know about incoming animals more than when i was just a customer. They opened a new pet store and i was sent to work there. Once the supplier brought animals in, i finally could check what ratties we've got. I only saw this little white and brown butt peeking from a tube in the cage. I intentionally scratched the butt to see if the rat quickly runs into their wooden house. But the rat didnt move at all. And because my job is also to check if all animals are alive, i grebbed its tail and pulled him out of the tube to find out a very calm and surprisingly tamed dumbo baby boy!!!

Its very rare to find a tamed rat in a pet store, they are usually scared to death, but these three eatties that we've got were all very used to human hand, being helt and petted. There were classic top eared albino boy and girl and this only white and brown dumbo. And i knew that i just have to get him!

The second day, on friday 11.1.2019 i decided to bring him home. But because my shift ends at 9pm and it was snow storm out there and crazily cold night, i bought also a wool for hamsters to keep this boy warm in the box before i make it back home.

I was thinking of two names meanwhile, mates and simon seemed to fit him the best. But because i already have two out of three rats named with letter S at the beginning, i decided to stay with mates <3

When he first met my 3 other rats, boys pablo and sebi and girl sasha, i knew that pablo will accept him easily, hevis a loving boy and when sasha came, pablo was the one who took care of her when she was little and wanted attention. Now, i knew that sasha will accept mates too, she has the same type of behavior like my previous girl míša that loved every living being and sasha is very interactive girl. So when pablo met mates, ge sniffed to him and then just went to play with the box i brought mates in xD
When sasha met him, she cleaned him and then just begged me for some treats as always xD

But sebi was always the problem. Already as a baby he had hard time befriending pablo, took him month to accept him by spending that whole time in the same small cage with a cone on his neck after they both got neutered. When he first met sasha, he kept badly attacking her so i had to make sure to be nearby to separate them with hand and roll sebi onto his back to show him who has the final word in this pack. The next day they both slept together in a hanging house, so that was a surprise. But maybe he accepted her this dast because she is a girl and because she sidnt fear him.

But poor mates is kinda a scaredy cat. Sebi sniffed to mates for quite a time. Didn't seem to have a problem with him, but once they both were in the cage, sebi attacked mates aggressively. Poor mates got so scared and stressed he was even afraid to breathe normally until i pulled him out and calmed him down...since then i introduce mates and sebi very carefully and only under my supervision. Sebi keeps making the fight pose be lifting his butt up and pressing mates to walls by his body, "sneezing" loudly and then bites him badly. But i prevent that to happen by keeping my hand nearby now on. Its a week since i have mates and looks like sebi is slowly giving up and starts to deal with that mates aint leaving from his life. I still keep these two separated at night or when im away. Mates seemes to be a bit scared by big cage so when im gone or asleep, i keep him in a smaller cage where he seems to feel more safe. But sonetimes i switch it and put sebi in therecwhike mates is in the big cage to get used to the bigger free space, to befriend pablo and sasha and to leave his smell there so when sebi gets back, he knows that mates owns the cage too already. Mates is already more daring to face sebi. Eventho sebi is like twice as big, its still a good sign that mates is finally opening himself and decides to protect himself.

Sebi might also have hard time accepting mates because mates isn't neutered yet so his smell might irritate sebi to treat him as an intruder. Mates will be neutered next month, so he will then spend some longer time in the small cage with cone till the wound heals up. So durring that time i will put sasha or pablo into that cage with him for some time so he wont feel alone.

In the worst casevi will gave to give sebi to another rat lover because sebi starts to be more agressive towards sasha and pablo again too. Sebivis simply that loner type of rat but sadly tge second cage is not that big enough to be liveable for a big male rat and i don't have money for second cage and its equipment...so he will either get used to mates and will calm down in attacking others or he will have to find a new home where they will be able to provide him the needed environment...its a yard decision, but...he doesnt feel anything to me anyway and im afraid that eventho i love him, the love is not hig enough as well... i tried my best but he is simply too complicated to handle...i will have to think this through deeper before i do something id regret...

But back to mates, even though he is a scaredy cat, he is calming down, likes to "pancake" in my hand when being petted and lies with me in bed when im on pc. He is also finally a kissy rat that I've been looking for a long time, he keeps licking my hands and lips too. I believe that this boy is finally that calm snuggly type that im looking for <3

Also btw i love the shape of his head and nose from the side view, just like bull terrier ;u; and tiny eyes <3
