Description A pic of a Soviet soldier I found a couple of years ago, shortly after the WW2 US soldier portrait.

I got sick of making it when I was making the background. Finished it tonight, a little quickly. My style changed abit since 2006.

My dad says it's one of my best work. I disagree.

You underestimated your work's quality. I believed it was an actual photograph for a moment.

The Soviet musters some joy in thinking of his loved ones back home, with the sharp contrast of the wasteland all around him; very moving.
This is my favorite portrait from you so far.

You have talent, no doubt about it. As for the pic itself, it's just awesome. Really has that lonely, yet calm feel. Keep up the good work!

I find your art disturbing and amazing. Come to think of it, it matches the mood of the book 'All quite on the western front' pretty well.

i agree it is one of your best, It takes some serious skill to properly convey snow with pencils ( and/or charcoal) I love this, I could see this being something your remembered for, some day after your dead and gone, someone will be buying this piece for copious amounts of money to hang it over their toilet

its a copy from a picture...how could something like that possibly classify it as better from the rest of his drawings that are 90% from imagination?

I don't really see why this is a matter of argument, I agree, his art is amazing, but I did write this roughly a year ago, at the time I really enjoyed this piece, and it was all a matter of opinion

you know some one i drew a picture for said they were going to hang it in the restroom, trying to tick me off; but i said GREAT, cause if you hang it in the master bedroom, how many people are going to see it? in the john everyone will see it, everyone's gotta pee lol

Oh wow. I really like this drawing. The shading's great, and the details...

Well, my favourite bit has to be the wall the Soviet Russian's leaning against. The details put on the bricks look like it took a long time, and it's well done. It looks real, I mean it.

I also like the background, though I can't find much to say about it, sorry. DX

I also admire the details on the coat, it's great! And the shading. I love the shading.

... I think I'm getting slightly better at critisizing. ... A BIT. Ish. ... Not really.

Great job!
It seems to be Stalingrad as during the battle in the city soldiers didn't have much opportunity to maintain good-looking appearence (to shave, to sew up clothes). So intence the fighting was...

Excellent work. After enlarging the picture, though, I wish the background had been treated with as much detail as the soldier, though that's mostly a style preference on my part and it only bothered me in full view.

The soldier itself is very well done (particularly the face). My only complaint is the shading underneath his right arm. I can't totally understand what's going on there but the rest is great. Anywho, you have a great style. What kind of paper were you using?

Very nice drawing, I like the contrast of the detailed figure against the looser background, its much more expressive and alot more interesting then just copying the photo!

If it's not your best work, it's still pretty damn good.

Are you just working with pencils though? Cuz it must be pretty tough to get that range of darks and lights like that; there's also the kinda-visible scribble lines in the tones when you full view it. Maybe working in graphite would make them easier to blend?

I'm by no means an expert, but they're just my two cents.

I work with graphite. I just pressed very hard and the paper did not appreciate it.
