Description
June 11th marks the 25th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's film version of Jurassic Park, one of the greatest films ever made. Jurassic Park is a landmark in cinema history and has held a special place in the hearts of many people, including myself. I first watched it on VHS when I was about 4 years old and I now consider my favorite film of all time. It got me interested in filmmaking and also inspired me to study dinosaurs and paleontology in general. So, to honor this special occasion, I have done several drawings of the dinosaurs featured in the film and will be posting them.
Now we move onto the biggest, and arguably the most magnificent creatures in the film: the Brachiosaurus.
One of the largest animals ever to walk the face of the earth, the Brachiosaurus were the biggest of InGens re-creations at the time of Jurassic Park's construction and one of the few true Jurassic natives present on Isla Nublar. These giant herbivores roamed the plains in herds, browsing the very tops of the trees with their long necks. Several brachiosaurs had been cloned by InGen and transported to Isla Nublar during the early '90s. They, along with the Parasaurolophus, were the first dinosaurs seen by Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Ian Malcolm and Donald Gennaro during their tour of Jurassic Park. When Grant and the children Lex and Tim Murphy sought refuge in a tree following the Tyrannosaurus attack on the Main Road, they spotted some of the Brachiosaurus grazing. They even got to interact with one of the animals as it was browsing on the leaves of the tree they were in, just before it sneezed on Lex.
When I first saw Jurassic Park as a kid, the sequences with Brachiosaurus blew me away. Their scale was so incredible and so awe-inspiring to me. The fact that such animals once lived on this planet was amazing and seeing them brought to life so realistically was mind-blowing. To me, as an adult, the scene where Grant and Sattler witness the Brachiosaurus and the Parasaurolophus grazing and roaming the plains really embodies a major defining aspect of the Jurassic Park series. That being to show dinosaurs as actual living, breathing animals and not as movie monsters as had mostly been done in the past. That scene just really captured that beautifully, showing just how much care and effort the filmmakers put in to make them look and act like real animals. And it still holds up immensely well. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Brachiosaurus again in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It looks great and I can't wait to feel that sense of awe again as I watch those titanic sauropods roaming across the screen.
