Description The Survivor
The Grandmother's Tale

Once mine, now hers,
it hung on my wall
just as it does now on hers-
a little less faded and worn
radiating colors in the sunlight.

I carried it on my back-
like my own little boy
it had once embraced-
as I marched to the shouts
and cries of Mao’s men.

It kept me warm
during the cold nights
when a single fire warmed
the bodies of ten people
but could not reach their hearts.

It kept me alive
on the escape boat from
the hammer and sickle
to the Eastern Stolen Child
to the liberty of the Golden Gate.

It hung on my wall,
a reminder of my past
who I was, who I am-
waiting continually for
its legacy to be passed on.
