Lovely image.
The road marking mess with my head though - the dotted line implies you can overtake!

Road lines on the edge indicate dangerous territory, or soft, crumbling shoulders, and no stopping along the sides/way.
No room whatsoever.Β Obviously, this is a bit of a goat path, and you better have your eyes and driving skills well in hand.

One assumes that's what they mean - I would have expected yellow lines, or even solid white. The dashes is what's getting to me. Is that a European thing? I thought most of these sorts of lines were standardised.

As usual, Europeans are smarter and more clever with such things than Americans; more utilitarian in general.
The broken lines are far more eye-catching, and "alerting."Β Solid white not so much.Β (After awhile they would become a blur.Β Yellow, blah.)

I'm not sure, but I think this has not the same meening thatΒ the dashed lines which are in the middle of a road. Β
Here it's mostly to underline the roadside because it's a winding, very small and dangerous mountain road... And when there is no the dashed lines on the middle of the road, of course you can overtake, even if it's a little bit complicated here

I have driven on untarred (dirt) mountain passes which I would have thought as single lane, and had local farmers overtake. Complicated indeed. And in some parts, there are the local buses ... Africa is not for sissies.

I think dashed lines here meens you can stop and park your car on the border. Anyway, that's what we do to go for a walk, we pass these dashed lines when there is some place to park.
In France, we've not yellow lines for exemple... But of course, on a dirty road, you can do what you want, there is no specific law as on the road.
So I suppose the roads lines are not standardised in the all world...

Lovely light and haze. I find it interesting that the French place the dashed lines along the road edges. An interesting psychology, I suppose there is a kind of logic. Is this common in the mountains to your knowledge?

Thank you !
Yes in France you can see this kind of dashed lines in the little mountains roads. This kind of roads are too small to put dashed lines on the middle, and for security, mostly by nigt, you can see the road border. I found it very helpful
