Description
Karl looks at the clock while sitting back in a chair by the window, in an apartment that he shares with his elderly father and elder sister along with a new couple that was ordered to live with them. He realized that it was time to go out to get food for himself. He shivered, "Ech- it's mighty cold outside; I hope the soup that they're serving will be warm when they serve it." He walks out of the flat and headed down to the street and followed the crowd to the cafe.
Adalric did the usual Heil at the gate to the ghetto, the lower officers nodded in return opening the iron gate for him, he never gave it much thought before but he idly wondered in the back of his head why they needed such big walls to keep in regular people. He shrugged the thought off and headed inside quickly the muddy road already staining his newly shinned boots. Two fellow SS officers followed behind him closely saying something about how they kept the Jews very under control and well behaved hoping it would impress him. It didn't.
"Hey are you the new guy? Adalric right?" the 2nd SS said. He had a happy grin on his face.
SS 1 then intruded in; "While your here, you better watch the kikes. I heard Liede say they bite."
Adal gave a half hearted laugh; he didn't see the problem with the Jewish people himself. "Ha-ha, I'm sure he's right." He agreed for his own sake, he didn't want anyone to think he was against the party.
He continued to look around the streets which were far more concerning to him, the place was filthy and the people were giving him dirty looks, it made him feel rather uneasy.
SS one then continued: "Well the roll says you're on kitchen duty. Be careful as to how much you give each of them. There's so many of them and a handful of us. Remember that... As for where it is-" he points down the street and tells you to make a right and that you can't miss it.
He adjusts his hat slightly and nods "Alright." What a pain in the ass was this really as necessary as Himmler was saying? He didn't see the point. He strode down the road to the kitchen most people getting out of his way, probably because he was glaring into the ground in irritation.
On Karl's end:
"Oh god... where is the kitchen?" He asked himself as he suddenly took the wrong turn to accidentally follow some of the people to a temple. (Today wasn't for prayer! even if it is Saturday.) He back tracked to the cross-section where he made his wrong turn; right up the street from Adalric. He scratched the back of his head and looked about.
He saw the SS troop walking up and he decided to calmly but boldly approach and say "Excuse me sir"
Adal snapped out of his brooding and almost jumped a little, he stopped and turned to the direction that the voice had come from "Ah, yes?"
"Ach, didn't mean to shock you but which way is the kitchen?"
"Oh." He tilted his cap up a bit and looked to the side "I'm actually going there myself.You can follow me if you like." He was being oddly polite for a Nazi.
Karl's held back shiver subsided and was nearly dumbfounded then regained his train of though "Wow um... Okay then! Thank you, officer."
He shook his head and smiled walking forward "No trouble at all." He wanted to get there quickly while the directions were still fresh in his mind.
An older SS guard saw Karl walking along with him and he came by Adalric and asks "um Sir why is there a juden walking with you? Shouldn't he be in line?" despite him being older he was still under him in rank.
Adal's almost light hearted and kind face immediately shifted to a much scarier expression "If there was a problem I think I would have handled it by now, I was simply showing him to the mess hall, we can't have people wandering around aimlessly, be on your way now officer there is no problem here."
The other troop then became fearful "y-yes sir" and he went back to his post.
Karl was a bit shocked; he wasn't used to soldiers being this nice. "Um officer, may I ask what you name is?" a touch of nervousness crept into his speech.
Adal looked up to him a bit surprised "Adalric, and yours?" he asked in return.
"My name is Karl Bremnerr"
He gave a smile. The both of them were starting to near the kitchen
"A pleasure" He smiled in return and started to head forward "Now if you'll excuse me Karl I've got to get to work, can't set a bad example, have a good day." He waved slightly and gave him another smile before heading in
He got in line, unknowingly stating, "Wow, he was awfully nice." Then the other Jewish citizen, an old lady sneered "Nice? Don't joke, boy"
Adal Put an apron on and stood next to another officer looking a little thoughtful "What nice manners." Okay, so it was vague but any less vague and he would be in trouble.
The other officer gave him an eye "What's with the apron? It's.... lacey."
Adal snorted "Any true man shouldn't be ashamed of his dress, I'll have you know I'm a very good cook this just proves that I'm a prodigy in the kitchen, unlike you I'll bet." He gave him a sly smile.
He snorted and giggled. He started to place the rations on the trays, small in serving almost sparing.
A small boy asked if he could have more and your partner simply gave him a dirty look.
Adal tapped the spoon on his pot, eyeing the mashed potatoes inside, he then scooped some up and put it onto his plate, giving a notably larger portion then what was normally expected.
"Hey they don't need as much as that!"
His partner snapped; Karl watching from the next row, hearing what was going on.
He waved his hand at him letting out an agitated sigh "We can't have people walking around starving, then they'll complain and I don't want to deal with that." Managing to come up with another fairly good excuse.
For the next few minutes he shuts up.
Then Karl's row rolls in. most of them were already starting to wear down from hunger, being impatient and old. Karl stood vigilant and didn't complain.
He got down to the serving area and then looks up and without thinking and said "You're that officer from earlier right?" He was then abruptly interrupted by your counterpart again
Adal continued to hand out good amounts of food without a second thought even giving some of the older people smiles while his partner wasn't looking.
The other Nazi sneers "Don't ever talk to us higher without addressing us with sir! Now learn your place!"ÿ He scowled down at him; as Karl glared back at him.
Adal eyed the two, there was a lot of tension he really wasn't aware of "Alright, alright its fine.lets not get into a fight here." he said trying to keep the situation from escalating.
He sighs' and whispers to himself "maybe my hopes got too high"
"Being called sir isn't really all that important to me." He said scooping up some mashed potatoes and putting them onto Karl's plate "But that's just me." He laughed a bit to himself.
Karl smiled at him, while Adal's partner is still like adfkdsklfsdd. "I'll just be more careful then" he goes to sit down and eat.
Adal nodded in return and continued his job, really, what was so bad about these people? They couldn't have really been the reason they lost the first war, but he couldn't just question the Fhrer, he would be questioning his country then. He frowned a little at this thought.
