Thank you so much!
It is sad =c I hate to be such a downer to people with this picture, but I guess I accomplished the point of the picture.

Yeah =c
Orcas are difficult to show emotions with. Realistically, they have so much blubber that their facial muscles cant "smile" like a beluga. They effectively cant change their facial expression. Although, I hear their eye whites turn red when they're angry o_o Anyway, I tried drawing a few sketches with their "real" expression and didn't like it. I like to be able to give them smiles x3 Or frowns like this, when appropriate.

The orca in "Orca" was a combination of stock footage of Nepo and Yaka from Marineworld Africa, and animatronics. Most of the close-up eye shots were of real orcas =3

Orca eyes often have a pink tint to the whites like people. But a lot of the red in the eyes in that movie was caused by the flashing red light at the "dock" (they flashed a red light in the aquarium to stay consistent as if the orca was actually in the place the scene was shot at)

Thanks so much! ;w; I tried hard to keep them in scale - that was the part I was worried about the most.
For sure! xD I'm actually working on a reference of sorts for what the pod is now. Imalu, Kaiko, Nai'a, and Alohi are still alive, but Kahna was taken captive. Nai'a and Alohi both have calves now. Males named Mako and Skana.

They're all so beautiful and strong, Kite.
You make Orcas look like angels of the see rather than killers of the sea. : )
They all look so happy. ^_^

I agree, the name Killer whale is wrong no matter how you look at it.

Yeah. That name is the result of a mistranslation anyway. They were called "whale killers" because of the way some transient orcas kill and eat other whales and dolphins. Somewhere in time, the translation got messed up, and it got switched to "killer whale".
