Description #5 on my list of the Top Ten Badass Heroines of TOS.

Who she is: Someone who requires no introduction.

Why she's cool:
- She's fourth in command on the Enterprise, after Scotty.
- She maintains that soothing, telephone-operator voice even in the face of imminent, fiery death.
- She completely re-educates herself in a matter of days after Nomad wipes her brain.
- She can convince Klingons that she knows how to speak Klingon. (See my journal entry on why the universal translator is stupid.)
- In "Mirror Mirror," she pulls a knife on evil Sulu and beats up Marlena Moreau.
- She has jam sessions with Spock.

And, most importantly, she is the only female who is in just about every episode. Uhura is a senior officer, and she's treated exactly the same as all of the other senior officers. Apparently in the 23rd century, being a woman in the military, in space, isn't even a big deal.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, the hardest part of drawing people is getting the eyeballs to look in the same direction. This time, for some reason, that took freaking forever.

Also, backgrounds are for chumps.

Too bad she didn't get a more independent role in the 2009 movie. It would have been fantastic to see Uhura kick some Romulans behinds, but I suppose (can't actually remember) there was some perfectly logical reason for her to stay behind. :sigh:

At least we still have TOS-Uhura. I must've watched the scene when she locks that cadet in a closet in ST3 at least a hundred times, not that she isn't cool in every moment but that one is priceless

Uhura! There's just too many reasons why I love her, all the ones you mentioned and a billion more (but especially the scene when she locks up that ensign in a closet in the third film )

I agree whole heartedly.

Plus she's apparently the only female who doesn't follow the early 60's paradigm of seeking employment only to catch a man. Chapel joined Starfleet to track down her evil robot fiance, and Rand was all about Kirk looking at her legs. Uhura was a professional, there to do a job.

Well at least until the 2009 version in which she becomes Spock's arm broach. (At least the skinny little thing knows her alien languages.)
