Never done a critique on a deviation before, but here goes:
I have seen the animation to know full well the story behind the painting. The animation makes a very good point. The painting here, really captures the moment, like a second that one wishes would be forever. If realistic was what you aimed for, you succeeded. Like a photograph, the painting shows what the primary focus is, that being the mother wolf cradling her late pup before she is to die, which was all that she wants. A mother's love is a great example that humans and animals are much alike. The positions of the animals are very accurate, and the same goes with the detail of their fur. I can see how you took shading into account because of the grey in the snow. Bringing back to my point how this is much like a photograph, I like to think the trees are out-of-focus because of their lack of detail. As for the man in the background, he could have been more like a shadow if he's to be distant from the wolf.
It may be clichΓ© now, seeing an animal die in the picture, but it really touches the heart of the viewer. I am saddened that wolves are killed for sport, and that the wolf mother gets fatally shot, but I do admire that her love gave her strength. In my opinion, the viewer will probably pick at the detail in the background, but will love the colouring and the animals.
I may have exaggerated, but I consider this among the very best.

Now, I haven't seen 'wolf song' so i'm unable to compare this with the scene its inspired by.
I'm gonna start by saying that I love the use of colour, it's dark and cold, which leaves the viewer feeling a certain emptiness, that i'm very sure the wolf pup would be feeling. Against the backdrop of washed out hues is the rich red of the blood and the bright yellow of the eyes. These colours work to draw the eye of the viewer which is a great way to insight interest. When one looks closer they see the retreating form of a hunter in the background (or i assume it's a hunter) Which answers the question of 'who could do such a barbaric thing'.
Now I move on to technique. Your wolf anatomy is almost spot on, which I congratulate you for but the hunter in the background doesn't seem to be quite right, his arms appear to be a little too short for his body, though honestly it doesn't matter that much. Next time I recommend showing some snow flakes clinging to the fur of the wolves, which will add even further to the realism of this piece.
In short, it's a very strong piece and something to be proud of, but there a few things to improve on that could make this so much more. I hope you don't take my comments badly, but I believe no artist is perfect.

That was the saddest animation ever! Β I showed it to my friend, and she cried. I was like "No! Don't cry!" so I sat there comforting her for a while. Β Yeah, I really love the tune of the lullaby though its so soothing, I want to find a full version. Oh the picture is soooo beautiful!!! Β I wish I could draw like that! The shading is spot on, and the scene looks so emotional.

This is absolutely GOOOOORGEOUS!
I haven't seen this little animated short, but I think I'm going to have to put it on my list of things I want to watch, after this AMAZING fanart - as I said, I don't know the animation, but I'm sure this is a more than fitting tribute. <3
I love the muted colours and just how realistic and wonderful that background is, just slightly out of focus but drawing the attention more to the central characters.
The snow texture is AMAZING and I love the falling snow in the background, plus I think your fur texture looks wonderful here. <3
I also have to say that the eye and expression of the mother/father wolf is just wonderful... you can really see the pain in their face, yet still glad to spend their last moments with their pup - the pup that clearly isn't aware of what just happened. (I would say that the pup's anatomy is a bit off compared to the parent, but it's only very slightly so, and the piece is still wonderful. <3 The parent's right front leg is also a bit off, as are the paws of the characters, but theΒ main focus is on the FACES of the characters, so it doesn't really matter since these are more in the background than the faces, and you got those SPOT ON perfect! )
The emotion in this is wonderful, it really stands out, and I think this is one of your best pieces!
One day, I'd love to be able to draw like you. <3
