Artemis had been throwing all of her effort into Chi’s dressage career. She knew that. She felt bad that she had been neglecting her other horses, especially Keegan. He was close to the top in eventing right now and he needed just as much attention. Maybe she should bring someone else in to help, Anthony was getting ready to bring Starman to grand prix level and Gemma was always an impressive and versatile asset. Sighing, she stroked the tall stallion’s silky smooth fur. He had been meticulously groomed, copious amounts of purple shampoo used to brighten his buttermilk coat that was cut into by his sharp, white tobiano markings. He snorted, as if to say “get over it, I’m a big strong boy and I’ll jump anything you put in front of me, just try to hold on.”
She chuckled to herself, the stallion’s confident nature and general braggadocio always bolstered her spirits, and it could be a welcome change from the timid and reluctant Andalusian mare that she had been spending much of her time with.
Gemma was digging around in the trailer’s equipment room. She had brought her new gelding, a red roan Sabino Zlesdin named Red Moon to the show, getting him desensitised and ready for upcoming shows.
“Hey, Gem, how is the challenge class looking so far?” Artemis asked. Despite the required level of the challenge, it had a relatively large field and Artemis was further down the order.
Looking over at the arena, she replied, “well, Chris Burton went, he cleared the joker. It’s pretty nasty, but of course he’s a talented kid and he’s done a good job training that goofy stallion, although the girl who was showing from Pemberley, Kate Smith, she scratched. I think someone is going from Wyndshard.” Artemis loved watching anyone from Wyndshard compete. She had competed at Wyndshard for their international showcase on one of the legs for eventing and her and Keegan would be stopping off at the next leg in California before flying off to Japan.
“I should go stand by and watch. I’d love to get an idea for where everybody’s at. Do you want to come with?” Artemis offered.
“Sure thing, let me go drop this off at Wolf’s stall and I’ll be right there,” she said, twirling the end of her braid in one hand.

Artemis and Gemma watched the other competitors, and truly enjoyed the athletics on display. Gorgeous, strong animals leaped over the obstacles, riders deftly and gracefully steered their mounts through the course. Some were faster, some were more agile, all were impressive.

“Alright, you should get ready, you’ll be on deck,” Gemma said, and almost as if on cue, the announcer called the team of Artemis and Sky Pirate to the ready. She sprung up from the stirrup, shifting in the saddle and feeling for her seat. On hot days like this, Artemis was glad to have polished her tack, which gripped against the suede patch on her jodhpurs. Pulling at the front of her vest, she vented air down the front of her polo shirt. As much as she liked Pemberley, it was awfully humid in the summer.

Their start was called and Artemis quickly kicked Keegan’s sides, not that he needed much motivation to do his two favorite things — go fast and fly high. Asking him to take the jumps was answered without even a pause, he went straight for it. As time ticked up on the clock, Artemis felt her nerves rising as they approached the joker. It was trickier, and being right at the end meant that there was no way to claw back a lost point if the pole was knocked down. Clenching her fists and tightening the muscles in her legs, she prepared while they drove hard towards the joker. Artemis suddenly felt weightless as Keegan made his rocket-powered take off, her heart fluttering as they reached the top of the arc. Artemis resisted the urge to close her eyes as they began to come down the other side, but just as suddenly as they had become airborne they landed. She strained her ears to remember is she had heard the tell tale “clunk” of hooves hitting wood, and there was no thud of post hitting dirt. Feeling a jolt of excitement up her spine, she realized that they must have made it, and made it clean. She could hear the joyful shouts of her friends, all crowded by the concrete wall that surrounded the arena. This was a moment she felt she would hold onto.
