this is me // shot by D-m a++ in the original photo, I'm leaning toward the lamp post.. so i removed the post, couldn't remove all the grain from my hand, so I blurred it, and then added more grain (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em).
what came next is a lotta smudgin'.

looks like a pic with a very fast aperture, like the whiteout of your eyes.
I think it would look more realistic if the light had a halo around it like you usually get in photos.

Nice work. I just realized you had to remove the lamp post to do this. It's hard to imagine life before photoshop. I imagine some poor Soviet artist carefully painting a photograph by hand so Trotsky isn't standing next to Stalin anymore...

technical suggestion, next time do a eliptical marque/slection around the sphere, inverse the selection and work on the outside of the ball.
do an air brush just on the "flaming" side of 50% White, then smudge that.
that will keep the integrity of the sphere's shape (in 3D) instead of streaking the shape.
if you use the "lighten" only option on the smudge tool (with varying poressure), you can also do some flames around the edges of your fingers and hand, just to add to the motion, without actually making your hand shape go all wobbly.
unless of course, this was the effect you were going for.

i wasn't actually going for anything specific, just listening to music and just had an idea from this video game 'onimusha'.. when this dude has an orb, and he sucks the souls out of his enemies.
