Description "...may eternal light shine upon them, O Lord..." ~~ from the Latin text of the Requiem mass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Abel reached the outside of Cardinal Sforza’s compound without incident, ducking in behind the trunk of an elm to avoid being seen from the tall, paned first floor office windows. Her chambers were on the second floor, a receiving room and library linked to a small bedroom, all rooms lined with the same tall, paned windows that opened out onto a long balcony. The sun had started to set, so now he had to be doubly careful to avoid casting a shadow on the windows and alerting anyone inside. He could wait until twilight… but it was dangerous to simply stand out here until that happened.
Rubbing his chin thoughtfully, he glanced up the tree.
A minute later, he was a dark shadow plastered against the narrow section of wall that joined the Cardinal’s bedroom to her sitting room, gazing ruefully at the ruins of yet another pair of gloves. Climbing the tree and scaling the wall had been simple for Crusnik claws, although he felt a bit silly under the circumstances. Still… what was done, was done. He turned the carved brass handle of the French doors to the bedroom and slipped inside, only to stop, aghast.
“Oh, Catherina…”
Her face was drawn and pinched with illness, her closed eyes sunken. The porcelain-and-roses tints he was used to seeing in her skin had been replaced with shadowy hues of grey and purple, and her still-immaculately curled hair was dry and dull, barely reflecting the orange sunset glow that spilled across her bed from the open door. She was covered and swathed in blankets, nearly overwhelmed by the deep scarlet velvet duvet that overlaid it all.
He stood there for what seemed like hours, processing the horror of the sight; this strong, self-assured woman lying helpless and dependent, her power stripped away by an enemy the humans of this time had no idea how to combat. And to his surprise, and dismay – he was grieving for her.
Artwork interpretation from the anime produced by GONZO.
Subject inspired by translations of the original novel & draft notes left by the late author, Yoshida Sunao.
Pencil sketch inked by hand, scanned and then colorized in Photoshop 7.0 (using mouse and Wacom ArtZII tablet).
(edited to fix spelling of "Crusnik"... I'd forgotten that I'd adopted - incorrectly - the Slavic version... )
Gorgeous picture! Reminds me of "Sleeping Beauty". I'm impressed by the combination of warm colors and a sad atmosphere.
The illness is from the information on the novels I've gathered. I'm taking that snippet of info and running with it (in probably a completely weird, off-the-wall direction).
Yep, same pen name too (how conveeeenient!). "Transcendence" isn't up yet though... have to get a bit more written on it before I post, or it will hang on chapter 2 for months.... But thank you, I'm glad you like it!
