There are some photoshopping tools to "sharpen" the image. If this were mine I would try that on it only because you said you'd have liked to have captrured it in higher focus. It is an amazing shot as it is, and I absolutely love it!!! Even on the shots I get that I am happy with as far as focus, I still like to try "Sharpening" on them if that is the elelment that I like in the shot that I want to take "over the top." You may not feel it is pure photography if you use tools, but I do, because using the correct tools and knowing what looks better, and how to improve any individual shot is an artistic skill. I embrace photoshop!!! I am so glad I found your page today, you have a wonderful eye!!!!

I did sharpen this as much as I could - going any further and it gets ugly looking. I'm on an old version of PS Elements and even in my newer Canon DPP program, there was just so far it would go before I saw it looking so bad. I'm trying some new settings that I've never played with before considering the lens I like to use right now - and I'm hoping to see improvement as I practice.
Thank you for your kind comments. I've got many more pics to post!

I totally know what you mean... It is easy to push a tool too far and loose an effect. I'm curious what effects are your favorites? I think I apply the warm filter to most of my shots in photoshop or with a warm lens, that's probably one reason I love this shot of yours, the tones are like a warm auburn highlights. I usually capitalize on the most striking feature, is it warmth, clarity, action, etc, then I push that facet as far as I can until I hit that point you were referring to where one more notch is too far.

I've mostly been working to document the wildlife I see - so accuracy of color and clarity is my first thought. I'm still working on my photo techniques so really can't say what I like most - whatever renders the image as close to life as possible first and foremost. With the autumn colors in the background, it seems to naturally compliment the colors of the bird as well as document the idea of how easily camouflaged these birds are. As for creativity, I admit I really like some of the effects the Fractalius plug in can render.

what I mostly do in those kind of situations is let autofocus do the large work and do the rest by hand, works like a charm

I'll be working on technique to improve - there's so much I still need to learn.

luckily he/she landed in a tree right outside my window - I just focused on it until it launched and used the high burst setting on my cam to record several shots. My problem is maintaining focus. Something to keep practicing with.
