Description

Fairy

One of the most elusive and mysterious creatures on the planet these diminutive creatures are rarely ever seen by human eyes, small and gifted with incredible mobility it is no wonder why they were relegated to fantasy and myth for millennia. Reaching just under 2 inches with a 3 inch wingspan they are smaller than the size of your index finger and even smaller than the smallest hummingbirds, incredibly swift they are, relative to their size, quite possibly the fastest creature in the world. Found only in pristine forests subsisting on nectar and fungi and small insects they are more often heard rather than seen, the faint “singing” that is often heard throughout the forest is a clear indicator that fae are nearby, this singing comes in many different forms and tones and can be used to indicate threats or a signal for gathering food, they are also capable of rudimentary mimicry of human speech.

Their nests can only be found in old trees over 80 years or older where they create hives made of fungi mycelium, strong and flexible these nest structures can nearly encompass the entire tree itself. Within the structure they are led by a matriarch who governs the flock, with a structure more similar to how an ant hive operates with a caste of warriors and workers working to insure the flock's continued existence, the only difference in appearances being the soldiers are slightly bigger than the workers with more pronounced claws and the matriarch being larger than all the others. While thought to be insects they are in actuality bats making them relatives of the elves and dwarves as well, their wing structure is different than other chiropterans, the two digit wing allows them superior mobility, akin to a helicopter, providing complete 360 degree flight and can expand or contract allowing different flight speeds such as high speed travel and pursuit to slow hovering.

The known species of fairy, the common fey, gnome, pixie, sprite, and leprechaun, are well known in stories and urban legends however much of the benevolence attributed to them is quite false, many of the species are quite aggressive and any who intrude upon their nesting sites will be attacked with vicious ferocity but of all of the fairies few are as frightening as the “Tooth Fairies”. Tooth fairies, nanomoloch horridus (pictured above), as they are commonly called are the only truly predatory member of the fae and will not hesitate to subsist on anything within their vicinity, reaching about 6 inches long they are more terrestrial and larger than other fairies with their earthy colored fur camouflaging them against the trunks of trees bushes or rocks. Once their prey is found the initial wave will initiate attacks toward the legs of the victim to try and sever the tibial nerves with their teeth which are bladed and razor sharp, after the victim falls the rest will move in en mass and, like a pack of piranha, devour until nothing but a skeleton remains.
