Description Updated 26/12/2012 @ 10:35

This is the first in a series of images taken inside the moth-balled colossus that is Spillers Mill in Newcastle in April 2008. I wish I had more time to explore the facility further but my entry was closely regulated; I was working as assistant for another photographer for the day and he was only allowed in as he knew one of the security detail.

The name is referring to the position of the sunlight on the floor and how it could be used to measure time. It's the first concept that came to mind upon submission of this piece; the image itself is part of a larger series that explored abandoned industry, entitled Forlætan.

Edited for crop, and re-submitted as a place-holder before the rest of the series is uploaded.

Thank-you kindly, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. It was a surreal location, I only wish I had more time in there to capture more images.

Sometimes, all you need is one capture. One instant. Don't feel bad for the time you didn't have. Feel nice for those moments you lived within that surreal location.

Oh, I do; it was a marvellous place to explore. The place had been mothballed about a decade previously so there were coffee cups and newspapers from the time on tables in the break room, antiquated control systems in the main hub, moth-eaten sacks piled up in storage areas. Truly bizarre, and otherworldly, and timeless.

...You just created infinite images within my mind.

Exquisite atmosphere crafted with such mesmerising tone and light that truly emphasises the isolation, lonely and abandonment of the building.

Many thanks for the comment, it's appreciated; this place certainly had a singular aesthetic.

Yes, it was a great place. It's a shame I wasn't able to explore the whole building; there were entire floors of control rooms and computer stations and huge levels of piping and grain silos. It's unfortunate, too, that the place is now just flat wasteland!

I'm not sure why it's taken me so many years to get around to processing the rest of the images from this series.

No worries.

Oh, I can relate to this question. There are numerous raw images slumbering somewhere on my hard disk, every now and then I browse through the older folders of my archive and use to find some hidden gems there. Sometimes even images that I tried to edit before, without a decent result, but suddenly they work for me. It's a sort of productive procrastination.

Hah, yes indeed; some of my best work I originally rejected upon first evaluation. It's strange how that works out.

I really like this shot, simple but a really beautiful scene. It's cosy? I dunno, but it feels really homely, despite the almost-empty feel... and... yeah, a good capture. Makes me want to be a photographer, haha.

Beautiful (:

Yeah, it's an interesting place to look around. It's all left as it was when the workers walked out ten years ago; there are old newspapers on tables in the cafeteria an 'everything. I'm glad you like it, anyway.

LaughingAstarael In reply to arctoa [2009-07-25 16:05:57 +0000 UTC]

That's a little creepy, not gonna lie. Abandoned places don't sit well with me, especially when there are literal remainders of those who came before.

Can't wait to see more (:

It has something of a post-apocalyptic feel so I can understand that. There are other shots but whether they make it online or not is anyone's guess. Hah. I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to even consider them.

I do have to admit that abandoned places give me varying degrees of screaming heebie-jeebies anyway, haha.

I hope they do, for the record (:

It was indeed warm, considering the time of year. The sun was beating down outside but inside it was ice-cold as barely any light or warmth got through the thick walls. Thank-you for the comment.
