I. love. that. dress. I want that dress.
So Bail and Breha were not on-planet when it was destroyed? Or it wasn't destroyed, just devastated like Jedha?

I was thinking it got the Jedha treatment, yeah. So Leia still has her parents (and some knowledge of her birth parents, because Bail saw Luke wandering around and is like "OH MY STARS LOOK HOW TALL HE GOT" and explanations had to be made) (I just need Bail and/or Breha jumping in to fill the void Beru and Owen left behind in Luke's life. I need it)
I kind of want that dress too lol. I imagine it feeling really cool and soft, like a pair of silk pajamas my sister brought back from Thailand a long time ago.
Leia in this also found out the Vader connection when said Sith lord nabbed her brother, but he doesn't know that she's his daughter and she's not really interested in telling him. (Unless it has some psychological shock-value to it. She's not above that, especially if it means rescuing her twin)

I love fics where Bail and Breha survive. I adore them, especially Bail. And it would have been amazing if the twins could have been kept together. I do understand why they split them up, but... I bet anything that Bail and Breha wished they could have taken both of them...
How did Vader nab Luke in this one?

...I hadn't really thought that out, but I'm guessing it was a variation on Bespin. Leia has to have her shields up like the entire time because she is determined to keep the Sith lords underestimating her but then here comes darling Brother, who....well he's quite formidable when it comes to the showier aspects of the Force, but shielding isn't really his thing. And the trap was set for him anyway, so that's all kinds of problematic. Leia figures they'll pull the same kind of stunt they always do, where one slips out in the fracas and comes in from behind to strike a blow and save their twin.
But Vader was less concerned with fighting Luke this time, and more concerned with containing him. You ever see the scene in season two of Rebels where he's fighting Kanan? Luke is definitely shorter than Kanan, I daresay, and Vader would have no trouble disarming him. Just wait until he lunges, grab his wrists in one hand, grab the lightsaber in the other, phew! That's taken care of and nobody even lost a limb.
Keeping Luke from squirming away long enough to tell him why he's been hunting him though, that is the hard part. Lucky for Vader, Luke is stunned enough by the news to not put up much of a fight when he's dragged to the shuttle. (three weeks of panicky siblings, yelling at dead jedi, and very very awkward interactions follow, but Luke's got a big heart and so help him Vader's not getting away from that)

Maybe it's not so much that he's terrible at shielding as perhaps that he just seems that way compared with "not even Palpatine guessed" Leia

Very appropriate. Anakin would be very proud.

If he didn't almost keel over from shock after almost mistaking her for Padme's ghost at first, I suppose π

Wild! And impresive.
---
Breha crossed the room in an instant, hands outstretched. "No, oh no my angel, no! I know this is something that you must do. I only wish that it was not you who must lead from the front lines today! If something were to happen-" she cut herself off and embraced her daughter.
Taking a fortifying breath, the queen opened the little pot of red facial paint on the table -- a keepsake from her old family estate, now reduced to volcanic fields -- and dipped her fingers into it.
"Now," she said softly, "This will give your father a heart attack," and she painted two tiny circles on Leia's cheeks, "But it may give your soldiers an extra ounce of courage."
Carefully, she painted her daughter's top lip scarlet, and divided the lower lip after the fashion of Naboo royalty.
"There," she swallowed back tears. "Now you are ready, our avenging angel."

Oh yes, those cheek markings, they'll give Vader a heart attack. It'll make her look like Padme!

and the irony there is that Breha was talking about Bail. But yeah, it'll definitely freak out both of her dads. (And it's a little hard to tell, but Leia is actually wearing that necklace from the end of ANH, which apparently belonged to Breha. So she's wearing something from both her mothers, and she's about to go give both her fathers a heart attack for very different reasons)

Since its been fluttering about my head for weeks in one form or another, I may as well XD
The explosion rocked the compound, knocking out their scanners. Three more blasts followed the first, dotting the landscape with fire. Ignoring the shouts of his men, Darth Vader strode to the edge of the force field and looked out at the army approaching. An open attack by the Rebels was suicide. They did not have the numbers or weapons to be a match for the Empire. It would be more merciful to end them now.
"Father, please. Don't do this," Luke stood at his elbow, pleading.
Vader spared him a glance and touched his shoulder briefly. "This is war, my son," he said emotionlessly. Then he stepped out of the force field to confront the Rebels.
They carried Gungan shields, or something based on them, and marched in ranks. It was almost impressive. At their head strode a slip of a girl wearing the royal colors of Alderaan. Ah, Princess Leia had chosen to fight from the field. That was unusual.
All at once he froze, and had the respirator not been an automatic system he would have stopped breathing. Lit by the glow of the fires the girl approached and he saw the crimson spots on her cheeks and the division of her lip. The nagging familiarity of his young enemy's face at last clicked into place in his mind and he could not stop a strangled cry.
"Padme!"
The Princess stopped three yards away from him and ignited a sapphire blade, swinging it up into a guarded position. She tossed her head with a fearsome look in her eye.
"That's right," she said coolly. "I've been told I take after my first mother quite a lot."
"Impossible!" Vader gasped.
"Improbable!" Leia corrected. "Now stand aside, Lord Vader. I've come for my brother and I won't leave without him."
Recovering -- just barely -- from the shock, Vader raised his own saber. "No indeed. You will not leave without him, as you will be joining him, daughter," he retorted.
A daughter! he marveled in the privacy of his own mind, I was right, Padme, a daughter!
Leia twirled her saber in a way she could only have learned from Ahsoka and bared her teeth. "Well are we going to stand around here all day?" She asked with a fierce grin, "Or are we going to fight?"
