Description Nothing hugely in-depth, just a fairly quick and overdue semi-moody portrait, inspired by 's lovely OC Shaina (shown here and here ), and although I can't say that the hair I've used here is a perfect match, it's about halfway close without sucking too terrible hard, so I just dealt with it.

See, the beauty of hand-drawing pictures is that you never have to settle for what's in your runtime directory.

Models and textures from Daz, Danie/Marforno, and rebelmom. Modeled and Rendered in P7, Posted in CS3. Boom.

Isn't that the truth? I decided to do a 3D pic for a 2D artists contest a while ago, I picked my favorite picture of my favorite character of hers and tried to duplicate it in 3D. When I got to the top, I couldn't find one that was even similar that FIT my model, so I decided to try something completely different. The original artist liked MY top so much she suggested redoing her picture with it. I told her to not do that, I LOVED her picture just the way it was. LOL!

Sometimes trying to do 2D as 3D yields some really nice compositions, but I've found (especially since I don't have the time to spend learning it in-depth or the money to pay for custom props) that unless you're a good 3D modeler more often than not you have to cut corners and try to make do. Sometimes I've even pointed the original creators to Renderosity/Daz and told them to find a character/clothing selection they thought best fit their character... and if I didn't already have it, I bought it.

The good news is that a lot of 2D artists who don't know/use Poser still understand this and are usually pretty happy just for the artistic nod to their original work, even if you can't make a perfect match. That's a huge plus. ^_^

Yeah, the 2Ds get this "you just click on a piece of clothing like putting another lego on your stack and you are done!" When the truth is that even a piece of costuming that was made for a specific model may not fit the base-morph, or may fit that but not adjust or be adjustable to any modifications. OR, as I'm finding with the great Hope coat I put on my Cairbre character, there aren't any morph-dials for the lower part of it, it follows the thigh to a point, but not the shins at all, so how many poses does that prevent me from using? I can't sit him or kneel him or do any pose where the shins are NOT essentially in straight line with the thighs. So now I'm left wondering if I should do a costume change and explain it in the story, or just live with the limitation?

the lighting on this is beautiful. Everything looks very soft and warm.

Thank ya, darl! I really like the way this one turned out, myself... the hardest part was finding a model base that looked pretty enough to be Shaina, and I still don't think I have it completely down yet. ^_^

Mooky's Shaina is one of many reasons that people question my sexuality. YOU CAN BE STRAIGHT AND APPRECIATE YOUR OWN SEX, DARNIT!

Anyhoo... I believe it's a testament of your skills that I knew exactly what character this was when I saw the thumbnail. Kudos to you!

If I were female, I'd probably still be all sorts of gaga over Shaina. ....... I don't think there's any way I can write that where I look at it and don't go "Wha...?"

At any rate, something I always have a hard time doing is following up someone's character artwork with my own work in Poser, because I almost always have to 'settle' rather than getting it exactly right. I just lack the time/ability (thus far) to create and texture my own conforming clothing, so I generally have to make do by adapting others' mesh work with my own texturing. BUT... I am ridiculously happy when someone takes a look at my work and knows exactly who I'm modeling, because I've at least come close (i.e., the pics of BlackMatryx and Rox). That always makes it worthwhile. Thanks for the kind words, darl!

Thank ya, Annie! I was pretty glad this turned out nicely... I had a feeling the red dress would turn out pretty nice against her skin and the sorta stark-colored background, but when it was going through renders, I even found myself going "dannng, that lighting made that look niiiice."

Seeing something in Open GL is a far cry from seeing it actually rendered, I guess. Glad ya liked it!

Yes, ya should! Those comics rocked!

I'm really thrilled you liked this pic... maybe soon I'll do some others! I tend to do my best work when it comes to fantasy themes.... gee, go fig.

Glad you liked her! I really wanted to do a nice character pic to break into my recent art funk, and fortunately, Shaina inspired me enough to do this. I'm still not completely happy with everything (that hair just is not her) but I'm glad everyone's enjoyed the pic!

Do I lose points in the 'utter bastard' competition if I say no? As much as she might be a ridiculously primo hottie to statuify, blind or not, I do not yet have any plans to do a picture of that, so I'd have to say that this staff is a different magic altogether.

Possibly even.... *shudder* ...helpful magic.

As always, your attention to details and backgrounds is impeccable. Usually, I have some nits to pick, but this time there is only one:

The model's right hand, index finger. The knuckle looks... off. Probably just a trick of the light but my obsessive compulsive senses are tingling. If you think it's fine, then that's great, but I'd recommend a quick rerender from a different camera angle, just to be sure

So... is she getting ready to add some hotties to her trainer's gallery?

ArgoForg In reply to ChrisStalis [2008-04-19 14:50:48 +0000 UTC]

Much thanks, Chris! Glad you like it!

I'd agree that the lighting on this makes for some strange effects in this... especially the backlighting on the figure. That could very well be causing the discrepancy. I actually thought the weirdest thing about it was how either it, the perspective or camera angle made her left hand look really thin where she's grasping the staff, but I did a flyaround view of that hand, and it's actually positioned right. Poser 7 on the whole is taking a little time for me to get used to... it's quite a weird step up from P5. But keep pointing out those nits! I appreciate it!

As to adding to her trainer's gallery? I can't say. That would be telling.
