    Tris glanced at Theo, but her mutinous glare softened, replaced by an anxious crease in her brow. She looked back at Bastian. “Then chief Ianushko—”
    “Is already en route to the site with as many officers as he can spare,” Bastian assured her. “Now please. We should go.”
    “Go where? Surely the Estate is secure. Are there protesters outside?”
    Bastian gave her a suffering look. “No— not yet at least. But I would be more at ease knowing you were safe in your cathedral apartments until the situation is diffused.”
    “The cathedral? But I can’t possibly help from up there!”
    “Tristine, this is not a question of utility,” he shot back, visibly struggling to keep his voice calm and civil. “I cannot speak for the situations in the other Districts, but the Metavoliseum is too public— too loud. If I was an enemy of the city— another Caxcan— I would find it an opportune moment to strike while attention is diverted.”
    All of the anger, and the rest of the color, drained out of her at once. She opened her mouth to argue, but after several failed attempts she just closed it, jaw tightening. She glanced at Theo again, silently entreating him for guidance. Or perhaps reassurance.
