Wait, did you mean this is the only time the gun will be used story-wise? If so, then no. It’s going to feature in my next story after the one I’m currently writing.

Then yes. It’s temporary. The in universe explanation is that they work best when half fused. They share a brain, so they can share thoughts, allowing them to share and compare knowledge, making their research move much faster and more efficiently than ever before. Not the case when they have to separate brains. They’ll take this form whenever they feel like it, namely on breaks or when they feel like kissing each other, but for the most part they’ll stick to the half fused form.
