That's pretty cool. The size of my stuff is usually big so it takes me forever.Β

Wow! That sounds gorgeous! I can't wait to see it! I think the piece I'm working on is like 19X16 or something stupid like that.

I do sell a few, and pretty much it's just shameless self promotion... I share my art with my facebook friends and family. Let people know what you can do and see if anyone is interested. The last 2 pieces I sold were to friends, one I met here on DA and the other is from our church. I knew my DA friend liked unicorns but was strapped for cash so I did a small drawing, Mystic, and dedicated it to her and let everyone know it was for sale and she bought it for her daughter. The other drawing, of the Mother's Day Faeries, came about after I asked my friend if I could use her photo as reference. She agreed and seemed really interested to see how it was coming along and when it was done I let her know it was for sale. She bought it the next day. Everyone knows I can draw. I've donated many to our Church over the years and some hang in the Church, but not everyone is willing to pay as much as I'm asking. I work long hours on these and I can't give them all away for nothing. But a few donated here and there, as promotion is sometimes helpful. That's why I've been doing smaller pieces, so I can sell them cheaper. It's hard, but every little bit helps.

That is great advice! I have a few at my church too. If you don't mind my asking, how far along in your career are you? And how do you usually go about pricing your work?

Thanks! I have been drawing ever since I was 5. I started out drawing horses...all the time... LOL! My actual artistic career has been about 40 or so years, that is to say, since I've been drawing or painting well, not actually getting paid as in a job. I do this for the most part because I love it so much. The commissions are a nice benefit. I did do some drawing for a few shoe companies freelance for a few years, drawing shoes. That was interesting and paid well. I just enjoy creating artwork, so mostly it's for myself. Especially now that my girls are all grown up. When they were little there were quite a few years where I just didn't have the time to draw. Now I am drawing, painting, knitting, crafting or creating something all the time. lol! If you've checked out my gallery you'll see I do many different types of crafts as well as drawing or painting.
As for pricing my work, that's hard. I used to price things rather cheaply. But when I worked for the shoe companies I made about $35.00 per hour. That was a lot back then. But If I charged that much now I'd never sell anything. So I usually charge about $15.00 per hour or so. I know pretty muchΒ how long something will take me...say an 8 x 10 inchΒ colored pencil drawing of a unicorn with a minimal background will most likely take about 7 or 8 hours, so I would charge accordingly plus add a bit for art supplies and if I'm shipping it somewhere I'll add that as well. The more detailed a piece is, the longer it will take. Don't undercharge for your work. People don't realize how much time and money we artists spend on our artwork. It is, for many artists, how we make a living. It's a job, albeit a job I really enjoy. Good luck with your art! Have a great day! Keep drawing ________

So what is your favorite medium?

Probably colored pencils. They're quick and effective. But I like acrylics and even just plain old pencils too.

I love colored pencils too. I also like ink even though it's difficult to work with.
