Description Last year I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work on a dragon book for Scholastic by way of Becker&Mayer Books. I got to take a crack at designing 16 different mythical dragons from all over the world for a book called Sink Your Teeth Into Dragons.

I had drawn hydras before, and so have thousands of other artists. With that in mind I wanted to approach this one a bit differently. Like on the Gargouille , I wanted to try and bring some shark qualities in. The basic idea was, "what if shark but also snake". It was only after I painted it that I realized I had basically created a hognose snake with shark teeth. Oh convergent evolutionary shapes. Looking back I'm glad I had the restraint to leave this guy hornless. With this many heads it would have been a pain in the ass to make him that horny.

I’m definitely enamored with the serpentine qualities you give to a lot of your dragons. I’d love to see your take on Greek drakōns like : Ladon, the ismenian dragon, Python, Trojan Cetus, Ketos, Colchian dragon etc www.theoi.com/greek-mythology/…

That's an awesome take on the hydra. I'm glad you went for a serpentine approach.

Also... " With this many heads it would have been a pain in the ass to make him that horny." That got a a laugh outta me.

I opened up deviantart to check for updates on a couple webcomics I follow, and the first thing I saw was THIS MONSTROSITY. I nearly had a heart attack. My verbal reaction involved lots of consecutive swearing.

Basically, this thing is truly terrifying and you've done an exellent job. I may have nightmares about crazy shark-hydras now.

Excellent work! I think leaving the horns off was a good logistical design, too. If you've got a bunch of heads swinging around with horns, they'd all be poking each other in the eyes.
