Description Twilight Meme from

I know there is a longer Twilight Meme, but I figure since I've never done one before I should do the shorter one first. I'll probably do the bigger Meme for it after I read Eclipse. I have to steal it from my friend first. xD

Bella Rant:

What do I think of Bella?

I love her.

And I am sick and tired of everyone bitching about her.

I don't like Bella because I can see myself as her or because she's an "everyday girl". No, I like Bella for her depth. A depth I find most people overlook. I'm tired of hearing people say she "has no personality" or "she complains too much". It only shows that you have no understanding of the complexity of her characterization.

I would like to say now that I know there are some people out there who also like Bella (or at least dislike her while understanding the depth Meyer put into her) so I'm sorry for this rant. But I think it needs to be made. So, I'm going to try and dicuss my understanding of Bella. I am NOT saying it is correct, but this is my perception of her depth.

It seems Bella's personality is based, for the most part, on one simple fact: she cares about others. That's not complex, you say? This factor, however, ripples through nearly all of the rest of her personality traits. Lets explore some of those branches. One side-effect of this quality is that she accepts others for WHO they are, not WHAT they are. Now, in a normal world, this would simply mean she doesn't care what gender, race, sexuality, etc. that other people are. But this is also the perfect set up for vampires and werewolves. She loves the people, regardless of anything that might be associated with their outward appearance.

Another effect deals with her empathy, and cannot simply be explained in an over-hanging sentence. Bella is empathetic, so she easily relates to others' situations and problems. This also allows her to easily forgive and tolerate others' actions. This means she prefers to not blame others for certain things she sees as resonable or unavoidable. Unable to blame others, all that critical energy is forced onto herself. She cannot control others (and cannot blame them due to her emapthy) so she blames the one thing she CAN control; herself. Obviously this is an over simplified statement of that progression, but it can make the point clear. She plays the "blame game" on herself not because she wants to be annoying or because she's stupid, but because she cares too much to blame others.

Another effect of her empathy is she doesn't want to bother others or be a burden. Because she can empathize with the feeling of having someone trouble her, she avoids doing anything of the kind to others. This means that she might have what seem illogical desires to, for example, stand on her own when she's hurt or, as on her birthday, not make a fuss (though there are also other deep issues with the birthday I won't go into).

And, my observations on self-confidence issues: Bella is empathetic and therefore that means she is sensative (even if emotions stay bottled up). Her lack of self-confidence is, in fact, a unconcious safety device. By constantly thinking that she isn't good enough (especially in the case of Edward who she adores) she protects herself for when/if the day comes that she truly isn't. This is clearly shown when Edward brakes up with her in New Moon. She easily accepts the pain of it all because of that safety device. True, he was lying, but if he hadn't been it wouldn't have been healthy for her to be in denial. So, while yes it is a very poor mental safety net, that is the purpose it is meant to play, even if it doesn't well.

There are other things about Bella I could rant about, such as her depression, but I think I've done enough preaching. The fact of the matter is, I don't see her as a flat, simple school girl and I would hope no one thinks that's what Meyer wanted her to be.

So, you don't have to agree with me, but I had to get it out. It was bothering me. xD

PLEASE do not post counter-arguments in comments or anything. You can say if you agree or not, but I just wanted to get my opinion out. I don't want to start anything over it really. It's just clogged in my brain and I had to put it SOMEWHERE even if no one agrees. xD;

I very much agree with you. People overlook that she's also only human, we all over think things in our minds, rationalize, etc.

NOTE:
Before I begin, I'd like to say, I'm not bashing you, I'm disagreeing with your critique on Bella's development, and intend to give you honest feedback.
--
Character development is not that simple. Bella is like the modern day Snow White. She's beautiful, kind, caring, hardworking, and naive, but views herself very modestly. She's only one half of humanity. People are composed of both good and evil. Even Martin Luther King Jr. had evil in him, and even Adolph Hitler had good traits (mind you I'm not advocating that Hitler was good and King Jr was evil. I'm a Jew, and I have several black friends ) If they didn't, they wouldn't be human.
Bella Swan displays little to no evil characteristics throughout all four books. She never thought twice about putting her neck on the line for anyone at all, and if she ever did, please point it out to me.
Her ego is fragile, and does no wrong. So far, she's only half of the humanity pie.
Characters also require likes and dislikes. Meyer has likes tucked in here and there but mostly her dislikes come down to Forks, people who try to hurt her and her loved ones, and when Edward leaves her. Very, very basic if you ask me.
Next, let's look at the Jahare Window of Bella Swan, shall we?
The Jahare Window, if you do not know, is sort of a road map for the interpersonal relations of one specific being. It's spread out into four different sections.

Section One:
Things Both Bella, and those Who Come in Contact With Bella, Know About Her:
Her Physical Attributes (she's pretty)
She Loves Edward
She's Friends With Jacob, ect.

Section Two:
Things Only Bella Knows About Herself:
????

Section Three:
Things Others Know About Bella, Which She Herself Doesn't:
(Since Bella herself narrates most of the series, this one isn't obvious to the reader, but Meyer should've taken this into consideration during character development, as it is crucial)

Section Four:
Things That No One Knows About Bella Yet (aka: Future Bella's Jahare Window):
This one sort of develops it's self as the story goes on, obviously.

Meyer clearly didn't use the Jahare window.

So, if I'm correct, and I may not be, because I haven't read the book in so long, and I don't have a copy on hand, Bella is, a 'Mary-Sue.' I await your rebuttal

Haha, the fourth book completely ruined my theory anyway and made her COMPLETELY into a Mary-Sue (at least for me xD ) so I have no desire to rebuttal. It is sad, really...

Totally agree. And because she sees people (or werewolves and vampires) for who they are and not what they are, she tries to get Jake and Edward to see each other in the same light.

Kudos for your rant! It was very well written and proved many good points. I have always liked Bella and have always related to her, I think deep down we can all relate to her it's just some people are close minded and stubborn. I think that's why Stephanie made her like that. She's very easy to understand.

I'm one of those people who bitches about Bella (when it's relevant to the conversation, of course), and I expect I still will in spite of your arguments. You present yourself well, and make a good case, but there are parts of it that I don't buy. I'm not going to argue with you, I just wanted to say that I disagree but still think your argument is intelligent, well-written, an' all that good stuff.

(Also, I like the meme drawings, especially number 1. I really like how you shade faces.)

I COMPLETELY agree with EVERYTHING you said.

I love Bella to death, seriously. :< She's like the typical teenager in certain ways, yet people say stupid reasons like "Oh, she's stupid and always gets in trouble". Sheesh, if she's so stupid and helpless, why does Edward love her, people? -__-;;

Sorry, don't wanna go on a rant myself... Nice job on the meme! Have you read Eclispe and Breaking Dawn? They're really good!

I notice that strong, pretty, generally good female characters get called mary-sues. I think its just because of jealousy. Girls think "what's so good about her? Why can't I have Edward?"

I think you stated your case well and totally nailed it. I'd like to see her be called a mary sue now.

As if anyone would want a cold, self-loathing, stalker, sparkling faerie! Jealous of Bella? Honey, I pity her so very much. Guess what? I'm REAL and I have a REAL personality and a REAL boyfriend who actually LOVES me. Bella is still a Mary-Sue, due to her near perfect personality, though I do appreciate that this artist actually came up with a logical comeback. First one that I've seen.

I love Bella. She was what made me love the books so much. I can really relate to her and I can understand her. The people who call her a mary sue or hate her may have missed the depth of her character.

In real life, I' am a very self concious. I'm shy, looked down upon myself, and I hide my hair in my face because I thought people would hate me. I even turned down dates because I thought they were joking or I thought I wouldn't be a good enough girlfriend for them. And yes, I always try not to judge others through appearance, and try to fix myself if I ever do that. I follow Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words. Judge others by heart.

I'm Team Bella, Edward, and Jacob. They're all awesome!!!

Hear, hear!

I completely agree. I make the same arguments for Bella, she is certainly a complex character. I think most cannot relate to her, so they decide they don't like her. She is not like most teenage girls, but also not the fairytale heroine. I like her better that way.

And props for the Jacob support!

Iwrin [2008-05-07 17:43:37 +0000 UTC]

bravo for your bella rant!
You see, I think Bella is exactly what was missing in today's literature. All female characters nowdays seem to have so many obvious personality traits that we can't appreciate when someone who isn't as joyful as Alice or so bitchy as Rosalie for example shows up. (I love Alice and Rose, don't be mistaken) Bella is much more quiet than them and with her being a narrator at the same time it blends a little, so people tend to ignore her. And they notice only when she does something they would done different (as in "Jeez, girl, stop complaining, dump Edward, go with Jake and start living you **** etc...")
I consider Bella to be very realistic character with flaws and everything. I love her although there are things for which I would like to strangle her a little.-) But that just makes her more real - she's a person with own actions which causes emotions in others - good and bad at the same time.

Hope I didn't bother you with my little novel here.-) Just wanted to say I agree with you and you said it all very nicely Bella diserves real fan-love just like others.

Not at all, I appreciate your comment. :3 It's good to see other people who think so too. Because I agree, I think some people don't realize how important and real it is to have a character that isn't so obscurely different that you could pick them out from a crowd. All characters are unique, but some are more sublte than others.

Thanks for the comment. <3

Alter-Eggo [2008-05-06 05:15:52 +0000 UTC]

I really like Bella a whole lot.
She's a very realistic character, for a main character, which you have to appreciate.

However, sometimes, Bella just does things that just really bother me. Most of it was in Eclipse, to be honest. I just think she should have put a little more thought into how she handled things.
But, I like the fact that she makes mistakes, and later acknowledges it.

I really don't get how people hate her so much. She's not that horrible of a character, even if she can be careless or too melodramatic, at times.
Pah.
Whatever. People will say what they want.

And I have to agree, my favorite parts of the books have always been the banter <3

Well, I even wouldn't mind if they disliked her, as long as I wasn't hearing so many cries of "MARY SUE". I hardly think that's fair; it's insulting to Stephenie Meyer and it's ignorant, in my opinion. But that's life, I suppose. xD

And yessssss, I love banter. It's just too fun <3

But yay Bella. <3 She goes through a lot and she handles it very well, for someone who's supposed to be very much a normal person, you know? :3
