Description I'm still not too happy with this (the lighting, mainly, and the curtains), but I'm going to let it sit a bit so I can work on the other 8 (ugh) pieces I need for concentration (fractured fairy tales, contrasting old renditions with new, so really only six fairy tales all together. I think they're going to be Snow, Red, Donkeyskin, TLM, Cinderella, Alice)

So this is Donkeyskin ideally. Very much influenced by Robin McKinley's Deerskin - if you haven't read it, you should, although it's a bit darker than her other work. Very good though; I loved her depiction of Lissar as haunted by her mother's portrait, and the growing knowledge of her father's intentions.

details here . I actually do encourage these, for once, just because it got -so- minimized when I resized the painting for DA. And those hands destroyed me.

[E] Lighting tweaked.

I saw this and immediately thought of Deerskin before reading your description. Amazing!

This is very lovely work--creepy, but in a good way! The title reminds me of one of my favorite Blackmore's Night songs

Nope, this should be a good size.

SOME day, you should paint Tigerlily and Merlin for REAL, so I can put them on my wall. Right now I have Tigerlily and Firecat on my wall, which is blasphemy. :/ You know... just saying. XD

This is why I will never be an artist, I do one painting that takes a while, and then nothing else for a year. Aaaah...but it was fun. Need more paintings which are absorbing and not "ok, let's just get this done with I'm sick of it now".

Nice! This is very inventive! I just finished reading Deerskin, and I think this does great justice to the misfortune of the princess inheriting her mother's beauty. It would have been interesting to have a figure in there that represents her Moonwoman phase, with the white hair and white dress.

Holy hemophilia, you always impress me! THE HANDS! THE HANDS are just FFFFFF! Can't type!

She's fun I think Deerskin is my favorite (for now) of hers though. The McK's seem to be doing well - McKinley, McKillip. I would die to do one of McKillip's books justice.

I think I'm in love with that expression XD

and OH MY GOD, THE HANDS. I just wanted to die after painting them. And then I realized I had the painting's hands there too, and was just, "no, I refuse." At least they're a bit better than my usual pocket/behind back/out of picture frame approach...

It's not really done - I still need to make those tweaks to the curtains Natalie suggested, and do a last light breeze over, but I'm working on Red for now.

GOSH, GO BACK TO YOUR EDWARD WHY DON'T YOU.

Okay. I looked up the story because I didn't know it. 1) For real, her name was Donkeyskin while wearing a donkey skin? -.- 2) For real, her father wanted to marry her that badly? That's just creepy.

On another note, I completely love this painting. I could list everything I like about it, but honestly, the only thing I DON'T like is the one arm in the mirror, the one closest to the viewer. I think it's kind of going the wrong direction, so her arm looks really thick and long. Other than that, I adore this. In fact, my favorite part is the reflection in the mirror. I would kill to be able to draw expressions like that. And the blood spatter is beautiful. And so is her hair. And the slash through the painting in the back is an awesome touch.

1) I know, not very inventive was she? I blame it on the trauma. 2) I know! McKinley's highlights that alright...

Ah, I should fix that I think Josephine mentioned it looking wonky before (when I was hoping to cover it all with the mirror frame. Go me *shot*). Dankee!

I think the blood splatter is my favorite too. Shows how much the painting is worth XD

Ameko-Shadowsong In reply to Ashelflaed [2010-02-22 02:49:50 +0000 UTC]

XDD The trauma, oh yes.

Hm, I think the frame would have to be quite a bit wider to cover it, nice try. XD Good luck.

Well, you know, blood spatters just take the attention away from everything else, and you have such skill with blood.... *shot*

Ashelflaed In reply to Ameko-Shadowsong [2010-02-22 06:06:38 +0000 UTC]

xD blast, I'll just have to fix it then. Oh well!

*Grin*
I was going to have the front of the mirror-dress covered in blood (the original sketch was so Robin McKinley heavy it's not even funny) but I backed off on that. But still, I could've hidden/avoided all the folds! Half of which you can't see anyway 'cause I painted the arm over it D:

Ameko-Shadowsong In reply to Ashelflaed [2010-02-22 12:39:03 +0000 UTC]

No, no, you couldn't cover those beautiful folds with blood! I forbid it! They're too beautiful!

Speaking of folds, I just noticed the veil more completely.
