The other stone ogre of the Smoky Mountains, Nûñ'yunu'wï the Stone Man devoured hearts and livers of whomever crossed his path. With his magical staff that sniffed out blood, he stalked the lonely balds and lay in wait for the unwary. He could not bear the sight of a menstruating woman, and in time, the Cherokee wise women captured him in this way. They pinned him and built a fire on top of him, and as his stone began to crack under the heat he told them many remedies and magics. When a night and day had passed, all that was left was a stone of enchantment in a pile of white ash.
