Description A Platecarpus pups its hatchlings in a brackish mangrove estuary. For those in the know, yes, Platecarpus apparently had a caudal fin, but I remain somewhat unconvinced. Plus those things look awkward as hell. So I'm drawing it my way, in full knowledge I may be dead wrong. Thanks and good night.

Done for a class.

Excellent work here. I'm convinced.

That's the intent. It's always nice to be able to drop your imagination into somebody's head.

That could hurt.

Great sketching! Is it just me, or is the new caudal fin-theory making everybody illustrating mosasaurs at the moment. Even I had such ideas...
I like the detail of that small guy there in the sea floor.

Well, I actually had a project regarding these wonderful critters, so I plead not guilty. But yeah, I imagine it's renewed interest in the subject, which is cool.
I like the babies quite a bit, yeah. I'm proud of how those came out.

One of the best underwated drawings I've seen.
I love the background, very rich and full of life.
And, yes, I know, the idea of mosasaurs having a caudal fin is weird (I still cling to the idea of eellike mosasaurs), but I guess that, as with feathered coelurosaurs, it's just a matter of getting accustomed to it.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. But I've been riding the feathered wave for long enough that I think I deserve to be a bit reactionary here. I'll get used to it eventually, but for now I'm keeping the caudals small. Call it artistic license.
Thanks for your kind words. I legitimately didn't think I could salvage this one, but it ended up becoming one of the best of the bunch.

Hahaha, sure, why not?
I'm not saying that it's wrong at all. I'm merely saying that it's all amatter of time before this whole finned mosasaurs wave overwhelms all of us, just as the feathery one did.
But sure, let's just call it artistic license.
You're welcome. And it sure did. I mean... whoa. It's a story in and of itself.

I actually drew it for a short story project I had to do for class. I like the idea that birthing in the seaway was so absurdly dangerous that most animals went up into deltas just to do it safely, a lot like dolphins and small whales. The big animals (like baleen whales) can afford to just go for it in the open water.

Thanks for clearing that up.
I did see it like some shark species that swim up to mangrove estuaries to give birth. I guess it's pretty much the same with smaller cetaceans.
And it makes as much sense then as it does now. Actually, even more so, considering the overwhelming amounts of large predators populating the seas back then.

I'm confused, it looks like you DID give it a caudal fin...

Well I did, but not the great honking one the paper suggests. I was very very tired when I wrote the description, mind you....

Isn't it though? It came out loads better then I thought it would. Thanks for the comment.
