Thanks! I wasnt sure about showing them side-by-side as the original can make the new version look too orange..

Wow, well done!

I'm just learning about how photoshop works, so please excuse any daft questions... but... when you say the skin was "selected", are you going in by hand and selecting everything (using the lasso?) and then feathering, or are you going in using Select > Color Range? Or something else?

Also, how did you get the History brush to work without changing the skin-tone back to the original color? And how did you use variations without it being really unnatural looking? This is way over my head... LOL

assimilated In reply to hottoku [2005-07-20 06:06:43 +0000 UTC]

I use the lasso tool, along with the SHIFT key (adds to the selection) and the ALT key (subtracts from selection), then I apply a feather.

Using the history brush involves using the History Palette. The easiest way for you to find out how to use it would be to use the photoshop help. However, if that doesnt help you, please send me a note, and I'll take some screen shots and write a bit about using it (and upload it as a tutorial... which I might do anyway)

I use variations until I get the tone I want, and then press ok, and used menu -> Edit -> fade variations to fade it back towards what it was like before the variations until I get something that looks nice.

Would it help if I did this image again, but included more screenshots of the variations, selections, history, etc?

Thank you! I'll read more about it in Photoshop... I knew SHIFT added to the selection, but I didn't know ALT subtracts! Good to know!! I'm a little slow, sometimes. Hehe.

I think I got the variations thing, now... do you also play with the different modes when fading?

I'd love to see step by step, but I'm not going to ask you to do this one again! It must have taken you forever! I'd love to see a step by step the next time you do some post work.

Thank you for all of your help!

assimilated In reply to hottoku [2005-07-20 23:34:06 +0000 UTC]

No, I just fade it normally.

It didnt take too long, probably just under an hour, but next time I do one of these, I will definitely do a detailed step by step.

Cool, thank you so much!!!

Also, does it matter what order you click the colors for variations? I wouldn't think so, but I'm just curious by the way you listed what colors you used...

assimilated In reply to hottoku [2005-07-21 06:02:48 +0000 UTC]

It doesnt matter what order you click them, but it does matter how strong you use them (i've listed them in order of strength that I used)

Do you have an image you would like me to "spiff" up like this one?

Ah, okay, that makes sense.

I was looking through my gallery and I don't... I was hoping I had one to play with. I saved this one to my computer and was playing with it. If I find anything, I'll send it over.

Thanks! I've learned how to this sort of thing because i've always found my cameras to be an unreliable medium (they dont record colours properly) or some of my images just arent good enough because I know at the time I couldnt be bothered messing repeatedly with my camera settings.

It seems like just about anything digital
can use at least a little post processing.
I'm pretty much in the same boat, and
have had to teach myself.
Again, great work.

i mostly have probs getting the selection tools to work well. Is there something you did that made it take less time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

assimilated In reply to Phalen [2005-07-19 02:49:44 +0000 UTC]

When using photoshop, if you select the selection tool (marquee not the wand) there is a menu tool bar and there are four buttons, the first one means you can make one selection (eg, you hold down your mouse button, draw your selection, then let the button go), the second one means you can keep adding to your selection (eg, you hold down your mouse button, draw your selection, then let the button go, and can hold the mouse button down again and draw more area into your selection), the third button means that you "delete" area from your selection, and the last one is something I cant remember!!

Understand? If not, just say so, and I'll take a few screenshots with descriptions of what does what.
