Description It was my first time in one Finnish "iron age fair", so i wanted to make quite flashy dining gear for my own use in that place. Probably quite bling pieces compared to simple wooden spoons, what you normally see on viking tables.

I'm not going to sell anything outside my local circles in Finland.
There is many blacksmiths all over the world, so you can of course find some local artisan in your local area and ask if can he make similar set for you.

Have you actually used them for eating? Or just as decoration? I like them very much

How tha hell did you twist them like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astalo In reply to HeathenFrisian [2014-03-31 19:54:02 +0000 UTC]

That twist pattern is too difficult to handle with forge, so i take usually oxy acetylene torch and twist small sections at one by one.

Thanks again for the faves.

HeathenFrisian In reply to Astalo [2014-04-01 02:20:51 +0000 UTC]

No but like, I've tried twisting in different directions, but it doesn't look like that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astalo In reply to HeathenFrisian [2014-04-01 17:02:34 +0000 UTC]

I heat about 15-20 mm section at a time and put steel rod to water bucket after each twist. Then earlier twist don't open in the heat when you are making next one and the final pattern will look nice and tight. That deep curve between two opposite twists is also quite nice bonus..

iiiiinteresting, I'll have to give it a go

StutleyConstable [2014-02-07 02:55:47 +0000 UTC]

Am I right that to get the pattern you are twisting the steel back and forth?

I've considered making my own cutlery before but always end up getting an order just when I decide I'm in the mood to do it.

Congratulations on the daily deviation, by the way.

Astalo In reply to StutleyConstable [2014-02-07 18:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I twisted the handles with oxy acetylene torch, because it's the most easy way to heat only small sections at one by one..

Astalo In reply to MindPsy [2014-01-12 19:49:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but there was not any forge welding methods used in this set. I made the knife from one solid piece of spring steel. (from old cars's leaf spring) And the fork & spoon are forged from standard 12x12 mm square rods. All three are solid pieces of metal without any seams/joints etc.

Astalo In reply to chrishelenius [2013-11-05 18:38:53 +0000 UTC]

Lol.. This time was even worse than three years ago. Please no more daily deviations for this guy.
I start soon to be afraid of posting anything new in here, if there will be so much work for removing thousands of messages from my inbox in one day.

Is this what's called a "double twist" design? Crank the bar one way and then the other? And I'm guessing you start with a square bar as opposed to a round one to get that pattern? Sorry if I'm being a bit gabby, but I love the look of this kind of stuff and an just curious as to the techniques.
