Aperture
Understanding aperture and how to control it is important!
Simply put, aperture is the opening in a lens that lets light through. You can control how open (wide) or small (narrow) this hole. The quickest way to adjust aperture manually is to use manual or aperture priority mode.
Aperture is measured in f/ (f stop numbers).
Smaller apertures are measured in larger numerical values while larger apertures are measured in smaller numerical values.
This means f/1.8 is a very large opening (lets in lots of light)
And f/22 is a very small opening (lets in a small amount of light)
To think about this intuitively, just think of it in terms of fractions. 1/8 is smaller than 1/2, but 8 is a larger number than 2.
Effects of a large aperture
Such as f/1.8
- Lots of light means you can use a faster shutter speed without a higher ISO, which means less noisy pictures!
- Easier to achieve nice, beautiful bokeh
- In addition to lots of bokeh, you can achieve a narrow depth of field. (Only part of the image is in focus- blurry background.)
Effects of a smaller aperture
Such as f/22
- Lots of detail, usually sharper corners.
- Sharp from foreground to background, wide depth of field.
- Great for landscapes and macro with a tripod.
