Description Katana reference. Basic jodan, straight cut from above the head.

Note how the fingers are spread rather than just simply fists. The index finger rests just below the Tsuba (guard) and the thumb sits in the second gap in the Tsuka (handle) wrap where the peg is situated. The ring and little fingers are loose then tightened to help accelerate the tip of the sword during cuts. Overall, the grip is loose until the cut is committed and the grip changes through different cuts and movements. This allows the fine control of the sword.
