Description My latest addition to my "Visions" project--an ongoing exploration of photography inspired by the Victorian classicism, the pre-Raphaelites, poems, fairy tales and folk tales--a portrait of "Bonnie Annie Laurie", of the old Scottish folk song:

Maxwelton's braes are bonnie,
Where early fa's the dew,
And it's there that Annie Laurie
Gave me her promise true.
Gave me her promise true,
Which ne'er forgot will be,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me doon and dee.

Her brow is like the snawdrift,
Her throat is like the swan,
Her face it is the fairest,
That 'er the sun shone on.
That 'er the sun shone on.
And dark blue is her e'e,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me doon and dee.

Like dew on the gowan lying,
Is the fa' o' her fairy feet,
And like winds in summer sighing,
Her voice is low and sweet.
Her voice is low and sweet,
And she's a' the world to me,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me doon and dee.

This image features Ashley [link] , a young model I was recently fortunate enough to do a shoot with, wearing a fairy costume. I loved Ashley's sweet smile and while I was working on this image, I found the song "Annie Laurie" running through my mind. (I confess that I also had Annabel Lee/Virginia Poe in my head...as Ashley and Virginia are the same age...but that seemed a bit grim--so I went with the lighter interpretation. )

This image once again shows the influence of Julia Margaret Cameron in my work...as well as the direct influence of Haley Bryan [link] whose work played a key role in my finding a way to get from what I saw in my head, to what I wanted to show "on paper", when I first saw a couple of her photographs, several years ago.

Through a marvelous bit of serendipity, she discovered ME, on another site I'm on...and when I visited her sites, I realized that this was that same photographer, with a considerably larger body of work--work which leaves me breathless. This image was done a day after rediscovering her--with her images very much in my mind. (While it is in no way an attempt to copy her style--something about her artistic voice reminds me very much of my own...I just take a slightly different path to get to a similar place.)

Things like this thrill me to the very tips of my toes...and unbidden a favorite Robert Louis Stevenson quotation floats to the top of my head, "The world is so full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings."

I've been staring at this work for several minutes and each time I blink, I found a new delicate detail on it. The model's so beautiful and has a very captivating smile, but you totally enhanced her image by creating all those textures, shadows and stain-like, fading-like details than enriches the whole work. This is a must-see work for me.

Goodness--thank you so much for the lovely comment! (See? This is what I was talking about in your journal--it's often several days before I even see my comments! And obviously you're already doing the whole "insightful comment" thing! )

This young lady was a pleasure to work with--I feel really blessed to have had that opportunity.

Thank you so much! I don't usually do multiple versions of an image, but I wound up doing this one in browns and in lavenders, as well...and the one I like best, is always the one I'm looking at, at any give moment! (I *think* I might prefer this one just *tad* more, though... )

She looks like a woman I know, originally from Glasgow, who lives in The Kingdom of Fife outside Auld Reeky!

Lovely image and technique. You're giving me ideas Aurora! Thanks!

Yes, it's 3 in the morning, and once again, I'm trying to catch up a bit, on old comments on dA (while ignoring the new ones, of course! )

My thanks to you, as always, for the kind words...and I must admit, I'm fascinated to think that this young lady actually looks like someone from Scotland--ironic, what with the title, and all!

Another night owl! I'm trying to reform. I find lately I'm too tired to get work done when I get home from work. Gotta get those 7 hours.

The worst of it is--I'm not a night owl at ALL, actually--I'm an "in bed by 10pm or I'll DIE" person...but sometimes, all night is the only time I have to catch up on dA...and once you get in the groove, the time flies by, you know?

The older you get, though, the harder it is to recover from it. I'll be paying for last night's all-nighter for the rest of the week.

My problem is I get my second wind at 11:00PM then all my plans for an early bed time fly out the window.

If I'm foolish enough to stay up that late, then yeah, that can happen to me, as well. Mostly, though, I'm sound asleep at that time. Thank goodness!

Thank you so much--on both counts! (Since I post a great deal in digital manipulation/fantasy--where so much of the work is all photo manips based on stock--not a lot of people seem to realize that the photography is mine...which makes it extra nice, when someone comments on it! )

LOL--one of my favorite things to do, when creativity is low, is to open up an image of a pretty girl, slap a new layer on her, and doodle glasses, Snidely Whiplash moustaches and a goatee on her. Never fails to amuse me!

(In fact, when I was in college, and started buying magazines for myself, I was faced with the whole, "Now what do I do with this, now that I've read it" thing...and since I couldn't bear to thrown them away, because I'd spent my hard-earned money on them...but, well, what to do?! The answer was--save 'em--and doodle on 'em! The legacy lives on, thanks to Photoshop... )

Athansor In reply to Iardacil [2007-06-15 11:50:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! I must admit--I really *am* pleased with the balance, in this piece! Sometimes you don't think much of the light and shadow either way...other times, you think you were close...but might have missed perfection by straying too much one way or the other...but I really felt *good* about the mixture of light and shadow in this one, when I finished. (I did several other variations, with different mixtures--at least one of which I'll probably post later, as it's actually going in a different direction...but this one seems best of all, to me. )

Which is a long-winded way of saying, "There's nothing that feels better than a little validation!"--so thanks!

Thanks, Sweetie! And I love it, too...and, in fact, wasn't actually going for strict vintage here--or I would've used another photo. In fact, I usually am not--I'm just going for the suggestion of another time--not a strict recreation of it. (Unless I'm doing exercises in PS...where I sort of set myself an assignment--and try to recreate some sort of effect. Otherwise--I'm just doing whatever feels right, with each image...)

So thanks! I rather like her little grin...she's a cutie, and looks like she might be more than just another simpering miss, if that makes sense...
