Description For a change, this is *not* a part of my Visions project, but rather, a bit of serendipity from an impromptu shoot this weekend, where I was experimenting in my new "studio". Those of you who are only familiar with my work on on dA, may feel this photo is somewhat out of character...but I have a great fondness for the work of movie photographers from the 20's, 30's and 40's, and every so often, I'll do something influenced by that work--it's just not what I normally post *here*.

The story: two friends of mine are moving to DC today. Yesterday, they stopped by, to say goodbye. Both were tired, dispirited, and pretty much looking like they'd been through a month or so of trauma, in getting ready to move. I had entertained thoughts of getting them to pose "one last time" for me...but one look at their faces, and it was clear that they hadn't COME with any thoughts of posing for me--and I wasn't going to mention it!

But then Maura left, to go get her hair cut, leaving Tina with me...and since I've been itching to do a shoot of Tina to make up for a rather awful one of her I did a year or so ago, I took a chance, and asked if she wanted to play. And she DID!!!!!

So we quickly washed her hair in the kitchen sink...I suggested that I try scrunching her hair, to make it look kind of wild...and then raided my closet for loose, flowing tops in flattering colors. The second one we tried was a forest green silk pirate-style shirt from the Limited (anyone remember those, from the early 90's? I still have all mine...blue, green, burgundy, cream... ), and it was HEAVENLY on her, so then we tackled her makeup--and when I stepped back to look at her, I think we were both amazed that our 15 minutes or so of work transformed her from a tired, worn-out moving victim, to a sultry siren!

An hour or so later, I had a card full of shots--including this one, which was taken *after* I'd told her we were all done, and she could get up off the floor, where she'd been lying, while I practiced "glamour" type shoots. As she got up, she glanced over towards the window, and I shouted, "HOLD IT!!!!", and quickly snapped another 10 shots or so--all of this pose, which I knew even then, was going to wind up as a film-noir style image.

The cool lattice effect on the back wall, btw, is another bit of serendipity. I had caught a smidge of a lighting stand's foot, in the upper corner of the image...and since I rather fancied it added to the atmosphere, I added several more in Photoshop, and shaped them to suggest the light coming in through blinds on a circular window. (Yes, I'm pretty darn proud of that effect! )

Don't you just love the unexpected?

(As mentioned in my last post--I am still extremely busy, right now, and won't have time for a wile, to respond to comments or faves. I appreciate them, of course--very much!--but please don't be offended, or think that what you had to say didn't matter to me, if I don't get back to you right away. And a HUGE to all my friends who commented on my last submission, and left me sweet messages, even knowing I wouldn't answer right away. You all make my life a little bit brighter with your love! )

Great portrait!

Isn't often true that those shots you take after all is said and done may have a very different magic from the more deliberate work you've just finished? Yay for Serendipity!

Oh dear--you leave me such a wonderful comment--and it gets buried in my message center, only to be unearthed months later!

Better late, than never, though--so THANK you, for the encouragement--and the acknowledgement that Serendipity is alive and well in our artistic lives...and totally ROCKS!

Thank you so much for writing! Late is always better than never. Believe me, I lose comments all the time. I don't know how those who get dozen's of comments keep up.

Keep up the wonderful work!

Ugh--I think anyone who's been around here for a while gets snowed under from time to time...and me, well, even as a very little fish in this huge pond, I'm usally snowed under at least a couple hundred comments...and since you can't scroll through them, you never GET to the older ones, and they just sit at the bottom of the pile forEVER!

How the big fish manage is beyond me!

True!

I just mark the two word comments as read unless they're one of my regulars or another artist. That helps.

Yes--that would help! I compromise, by just leaving an emoticon...a smiley works for most of 'em...but for the rest...well, I just do what I can...even if it takes me ages to get around to 'em!

Better late than never. If I leave a one word comment. I don't really expect a response. I just think its a bit more personal than just faving an image.

Thank you so much, my friend--coming from you, that is especially appreciated! (And YAY!!!! You liked my clever background!!!! )

I have a week off, and I'm planning on spending the time doing a *wee* bit of catching up on dA...cleaning up several older shoots...and then YIPPEE--practicing with my bran' spankin' new Canon EOS 5D and 85mm f1.8 lens!!!! (Sadly, no models lined up right now...but that's okay...once I've figured this baby out, I'll go out and find me some, and then I should have some real beauties to post. I hope I hope I hope! )

Always nice to hear from you...and hope to hear (and see!) more of you and your work in the upcoming year. May this be your most productive, creative, and fun year yet!

Well, well--look what happens when I sit down and start answering my 600 some-odd unanswered comments--I find something from you, about an image I'm awfully proud of, that actually made a rather disappointing showing on dA. Which, of course, makes me especially pleased by the comments that WERE left on it!

Thanks for taking the time to comment...and I wish you and yours a happy, healthy, and creative New Year!

(And perhaps best of all--thanks for sharing all your pretties on dA! Even if I don't always have the time to comment on them anymore--I am as big a fan of your work as ever...and love to watch you grow and evolve as an artist! )

May your New Year be filled with love and laughter and joy and imagination!!!

Athansor In reply to kayceeus [2006-12-29 18:24:49 +0000 UTC]

LOL--actually--I had a ROTTEN Christmas...in that I came down the dreaded Post-Nasal Drip type of cold the Friday before...and spent the weekend very unromantically trying not to choke to death. Fortunately, I hadn't any plans, other than a phone call to parentals and long-distance sweetie--and aforementioned LDS had sent me the first season of Macgyver for Christmas, so I had something to do while I was feeling miserable, anyway! (To make matters worse...I'm now awaiting a call from the repair shop to let me know they've finished fixing my car...and I can fork over $1200 thank you very much, for the pleasure of it. Yikes!!!!)

HOWEVER--those're just details. The yicky ones.

The good ones include the new camera and lens I just bought myself (BEFORE I found out about the brake job, thank goodness, or I wouldn't have dared!), which I plan on playing with during the next week, and learning how to use. Once I've got that mastered--I'll have to find me some new models--and then WATCH OUT, dA!!! (So yeah, I'm definitely hoping for good things in the New Year, creativity-wise! )

Much love to you, my friend--and many many hugs, from all the people you like best to be hugged by!

Oh I'm so sorry you're not feeling well and that your loved ones are so far away, I don't care how old you are when you're sick it's nice to have your mom there to take care of you! I am glad though that your long distance relationship is still going strong and that you treated yourself to a new camera, the heck with the car you don't REALLY need brakes, and am looking forward to seeing the new photos you'll take with it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athansor In reply to kayceeus [2006-12-29 18:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Ain't it the truth??!!! When you're sick--you just want your mommy!!! Mine's terrific for that. I can call her up and whine, "I'm SICK, and I want my MOMMY...", and she's all sympathy. For a few minutes, anyway, which is all I really want--just a little token sympathy, before moving on.

And yes, the long-distance relationship continues strong...I mean, c'MON--the man gave me MACGYVER for Christmas--what's not to love???!!!

As for brakes--yep, they're overrated. If you just drive slow and ignore all the honking, you can usually stop in PLENTY of time!

Come to think of it...it's been a little while since YOU'VE posted anything new, hasn't it? (Oh, not as long as ME, but for a while you were posting pretty regularly, it seemed. Taking a little creative breather?

LOL I guess if you can't have the real thing McGuyver will do very nicely thank you!
Yes I am taking a pause and not because I want to. Actually I'm trying to submit quality rather than quanity but these last few pieces have been a real struggle. I just can't seem to come up with something I'm really happy with, I'm hoping it passes soon! Well I'm starving, time to try to make a dent in all the turkey my mom gave me, turkey sandwiches, turkey salads, cold turkey, hot turkey, turkey ice cream? I'm getting desperate to find new things to do with turkey!!

Athansor In reply to kayceeus [2006-12-29 19:59:13 +0000 UTC]

ROFL!!!! That's right--Macgyver's and a stick of gum!

I *so* understand your artistic dilemma--since you know I've sort of been more or less there for much of the last couple of years, it seems! It's funny that now, when I'm brimming over with creativity, and have new tools on hand, I'm actually feeling very cautious about jumping in again. I actually want to really examine my work, and where I'm going with it, over the next week or so, to avoid the "quantity over quality" thing you're talking about. I'm afraid of doing work because it's easy--rather than because it's heartfelt. And somehow I imagine that you know *exactly* what I'm talking about right now--because you've more or less perfected a certain type of image...and a true artist starts to wonder if they're doing it because it's good--or because it's easy.

You'll get through it. You'll find something that inspires you...or a new way of looking at your work...or you'll just take some time to let the juices get refresh themselves--and then you'll be back, and better than ever! (Maybe this is the time to try exploring some of your own photography more? *hint hint* )

Enjoy the turkey--I've got a surplus, too--from Thanksgiving! I make a BIG turkey...then spend three days boiling bones. At the end of the three days I never want to see another turkey...but I've got bags and bags of frozen turkey stock--heavenly for dropping in a bowl of ramen noodles and broccoli, when you need a quick and easy dinner!

Also perfect for that turkey ice cream, of course, when I get the urge to make it! ROFL!!!

serendipity my butt, hun! sheer talent . . . that's what.

and I too love the film noir style! getting models to volunteer for it is a different story, and you captured something timeless! truly timeless . . . and glamour at it's purest essence.

keep it up hun! I am adoring it all . .

Thank you, thank you!!!! You know, having you around is like having my own private cheerleading squad!!! I gotta say though...everytime I see this image, I'm a) amazed that more people aren't as bowled over by it as I am (I STILL like it, even after time has passed) and b) that *I* took it--it's so unlike my normal thing...and yet--I'm still there in it.

And it's these pieces of art that makes all the so-so pieces worthwhile, isn't it?! When you just look at something you did, and say, "YEAH--I NAILED it!!! " Doesn't happen often...but whooee, when it does!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

redLillith In reply to Athansor [2007-01-25 15:39:18 +0000 UTC]

I know hun . .. there are a LOT of pieces of art here that go largely unnoticed. which is sad, because so very many of them just render me speechless for great lengths of time. anything that makes me grope for words is worth keeping! and a fave just seems so insufficient, you know?

and yeah . . I have so very many like that right now. I just keep looking at them and thinking . . wow . . . how the heck did that happen?!?! what master am I channeling? because that just sooooooo didn't come from pitiful me! lol. but it does make one feel all warm and fuzzy inside to revisit those pieces and think . . yes, I did that . . . now a part of me has achieved immortality.

(and I like being your cheerleader!! we all need one now and then, if for no other reason than to have confirmation that our time is not wasted on our art, and that it does touch others as we hope it will . .. makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it? and encouragement is free!!!)

Athansor In reply to redLillith [2007-01-28 08:23:22 +0000 UTC]

And yes, I know JUST what you mean, about some super pieces of art going unnoticed. :/ I rather think that the age of digital imaging has not only increased the amount of junk out there--but also the amount of quality stuff, as well--rather like the industrial revolution did, for art--by making mass production of reproductions available. It's cool--but hard to keep up with!!!

"Channeling"...yeah--that's what it is--it's having God step right in and take over for me...so that all I was, was just the instrument. It's wonderful when He does that--and leaves me feeling so blessed!!! Glad to hear that others feel the same way about their own work, sometimes!

(And thank GOODNESS, encouragement is free!!!! If it wasn't, I'd be in trouble right about now, cause money surely is in short supply, in this new place...and is likely to be so, for some time!!! Ah well--it's worth it! )

I love that you tell the stories behind the photographs: it makes them that much more vivid, and one appreciates the photograph more for the work that went into it.

This is gorgeously dynamic--the look on her face says 'bring it on' goodnaturedly, and the angle is wonderful. It's got such a cleanness to its angles, and yet it's soft, not sharp-cornered. I love it, absolutely.

My Dear--you have a very sensitive artistic eye--and "see" into images with a much greater depth than the average viewer. Whenever I read something you write (and oh, how much I enjoy your comments!!!), I am reminded a line from one from Anne of the Island--speaking about Paul Irving. "Paul was thirteen now and very tall for his years. His face and eyes were as beautiful as ever, and his fancy was still like a prism, separating everything that fell upon it into rainbows." I don't know what you're planning on doing with your life...but I suspect you have the gift of bringing sunshine into dark places...whether you realize it fully yet, or not.

Thank you so much, for your intelligent, sensitive commentary on my work!!! Hearing your reactions to it always makes my day!
