Description
Scientific name: Tarbosaurus bataar
Diet: herbivorous dinosaurs, carcasses (at the Zoo they are fed rabbits, chicken, sheep, pork, and beef)
Projected natural lifespan: 36 years
Length: 12 meters (~39 feet)
Weight: 6 tonnes (~6.6 US tons)
Locality: Omnogovi, Mongolia (Nemegt Formation), Late Cretaceous Maastrichtian (70 Ma)
Exhibit: Tyrant's Lair
About:
If Tyrannosaurus rex was the king of the dinosaurs in North America, Tarbosaurus was the king of Asia. Closely related to the famous predator, Tarbosaurus was slightly smaller and just as fierce.
Description and behavior:
Overall, Tarbosaurus was extremely similar to Tyrannosaurus, to the point that some scientists considered them to be the same animal. However, Tarbosaurus' skull was slightly different, being narrower and with less forward-directed eyes. Although this means it lacked binocular vision, it made up for it by its excellent sense of smell. This allowed Tarbosaurus to locate prey no matter how far it was. As an apex predator, no animal was safe from its mercy, including ankylosaurs, hadrosaurs, ornithomimosaurs, and even titanosaurs. If there was no fresh meat, it would scavenge the bodies of dead animals. But prey wasn't the only thing its nose was good for. Tarbosaurus had complex mating rituals that included dancing, shows of a colorful throat pouch, and the release of pheromones. The stronger the scent, the more an individual is ready for mating. Mating season occurs during the autumn months when the Tarbosaurus grow short feathers on their necks. Chicks were hatched in winter, covered from head to toe in spotted feathers for insulation and camouflage. They lose most of their feathers before they become adults, and some individuals retain spots on random patches of their skin.
At the Zoo:
In the Tyrant's Lair exhibit, Tarbosaurus represents the time when tyrannosaurs became large apex predators. Three of them are in a large, wet enclosure. They consist of Patch, his newborn son Speckles (both named for the distinctive spots on their snouts), as well as a larger, unspotted individual named Ed. Staff and visitors call him "Ed the Badass" due to a missing tooth and several scars, which may have come from a fight with an ankylosaur. (And no, there are no plans to name the Ankylosaurus "Fat Whipper" or the Tyrannosaurus "One Eye".)

The behavior is inspired by bears, frigatebirds, and chickens.
