Description This map shows how the terrain may have appeared during the Last Glacial Maximum, around 21,000 years ago, when sea levels were approximately 125 meters (410 feet) below present. This map does not include any lakes of this time period. This map also does not include the large ice field that covered much of the Southern Alps at the time. The colouring of the map is based on height, and is not meant to represent the climate or vegetation in any way. This map also does not account for any geological or tectonic changes in the landscape since this time period, as the map was made using a modern terrain map with a lowered sea level to simulate an approximate representation of the ice age coastlines.

What is up with: What I can only describe as a river along the ocean floor coming from multiple outflow channels from the SE part of the South Island. That just looks wild.

Yeah currents can flow along the seabed just like a real river. Apparently these undersea rivers can share similar features to surface rivers such as river banks, floodplains, waterfalls and rapids. There's some pretty big ones on the west coast too, and one running north out of the Cook Strait.

Generally seabed terrain maps aren't detailed enough to pick them up, but you'll find them all over the world. With high quality bathymetry data such as this, you can see they're everywhere.
