Description DL TO FULL VIEW the thing is retardedly huge

MY UNNECESSARILY LONG PRISMACOLOUR MARKER TUTORIAL with really bad spelling

lots of ppl have been asking me how I colour, I hope this can help even tho its really hard to understand and im really bad at explaining things and i dont even know what im doing half the time

original can be found:

total drawing time from sketch to finished scanned copy took me somewhere between 17-25 hours

SUM FAQs:
what medium do you use?
Prismacolor markers [link] I own a few copics, but I prefer prismacolors. Their nibs are harder, and so it's easier to make strong contrasts and bright, saturated blocks of colour. Don't get me wrong, I think copics' soft, brushy look is beautiful, both markers have their own unique style, I just personally prefer Prismacolors c:

where do you buy them?
I bought my first 40-something boxset at Micheals Craft Store back in 8th grade when they had some uber sale going on, since then I buy them on Dickblick.com cuz they're much cheaper xD

have you tried the generic DickBlick version of prismacolor markers?
I have a couple, but i havn't had the need to use them yet D: from what i can tell they're pretty much the same tho...

where do u buy ur white gel pen?
Micheals. I live there. it sucks up all my money. it's bad.

what paper do you use?
- I like to use my Copic brand marker paper best, it's thick and smooth, and so allows for much more color absorbance is that a word?so it's easier to get smooth blending, but regular printer paper works fine too, since it's thinner it gets saturated quicker, but will result in different, but just as nice results : D
some pictures i've done on normal 8.5x11 printer paper: [link] [link] [link]

UHM, theres probably more but i cant remember. IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK 8D

huh, now that you mentioned it I havn't seen the thinner tips in ages.

actually i just looked it up and i guess prismacolor doesn't make that tip anymore it was their old style, and the markers i have with that thin tip are from like 2006. im sorry ( they definitely were inferior to the bullet tips tho anyway. yeah, they made thinner lines, but 80% of them don't work cuz the small tip dried out so fast, even though the other side of the marker worked fine. so it's probably for the best they don't make them anymore.

Thank you for naming the colours you used! I'm so excited to start coloring with prismas. XD Do they have a strong scent to them? (like Sharpie) I can't take such a strong smell. x.x

thank you! I'm glad I could be helpful and while prismacolors do have a faint alcoholic scent to them, i don't find them nearly as strong as sharpies. I have a fairly sensitive nose and have gotten dizzy on sharpie drawings before, but i've never had any problem with prismacolors and i use them for much longer periods of time than i've ever used sharpies. i hope that helps!

Hi! I went ahead & bought some. The smell isn't so bad! But it does take some getting used to. If I have fans running, it's not that bad. Thanks!

FJolliff In reply to Dragonnerd445 [2015-09-01 00:55:43 +0000 UTC]

Beware the fans. If there is too much airflow, the markers will dry up before you can really blend them. Trust me, I speak from experience... I've ruined many a drawing because my air conditioner sucks and I had to use a fan... Try to set up the fan so that it sucks the air away from you rather than blowing at the drawing/you. It takes the fumes away without drying the ink so fast- keep in mind it does dry a bit faster than without a fan.

Just seeing the Ultra-fine tipped Prismas are driving crazy because I LOVE them but I cannot find them anywhere! I was lucky to find the few I have at Tradewinds in Green Bay.

UGH I KNOOOWWW they're being phased out and it makes me so sad!! the ones i have are super old from like, when i got my first marker set in 2008 and barely any of them work anymore and i can't replace them :c

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

samuchan In reply to Atomic-Clover [2014-07-17 13:19:42 +0000 UTC]

>< I hate that I found out about them only recently because of that. Even trias are getting phased out and some have that ultra-fine tip. It's always the stuff you realize you 'need' that ends up fading away.

(PS: Can I just thank you for showing that Copics shouldn't always be the go-to marker; that you can get just as amazing [or even more amazing] results with a brand like Prismacolor)

FJolliff In reply to samuchan [2015-09-01 00:58:24 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree. About both paragraphs. I have two copics, a cool grey and a warm grey. That's all I need to soften up the coloring for shadows. Everything else is prismacolor!

How do you get your scans so good?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Atomic-Clover In reply to ArdentDeer [2014-07-16 22:05:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh gosh, uhm, well I use an Epson Perfection V300 PHOTO scanner (idk what's good in scanner world right now, my scanner is like 5 years old) and after I scan my pictures I open them up in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and/or iPhoto to adjust the colors and tones until they're as close to the original as I can make them.  I will also edit any imperfections or mistakes I might not be happy with or dust particles that transferred in during the scanning process.
I hope that helps!

I think my eyes are bad. I couldn't read the text for awhile....nearly cried. So light goes on top of dark? Ok. I need to experiment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FJolliff In reply to BonumNox [2015-09-01 01:22:40 +0000 UTC]

Different paints and inks can be layered "backward" (light on top of dark), I've only really found watercolors to be dark-on-light only.
Luckily, prismacolors can be fairly forgiving. I would recommend testing your combo on scrap paper before using it on your work.

You're brilliant and we should totes get married. :T

I've had my few prismacolors for a while now (a gift from my stepmom), but I suck at coloring unless it's digital so I've been terrified to use them. I finally gave in last night and... Well... They're friggin epic, lol.

Seeing that I don't need Copics to make beauties like this makes my little heart happy, lol.

This is interesting. I had recently bought Prismacolor Premiers, but the colors don't have enough variety. I'll look into the choices you used for this tutorial and practice when I get the chance.

I must say, this is my favorite tutorial . I keep coming back because number one, your artwork is amazing, and number two, you make prismacolor markers more attractive than copic (don't be offended!). It's just a beautifully crafted tutorial, I love it^^.

Amy: How many colors do you think are necessary to do good shading and do you know where I could buy them individually? Like, just one marker? I only have the 24 set right now, and I shan't be buying another set anytime soon since I don't have a great deal of money right now, but my set doesn't come with a good skin-color. I know where I can buy copics individually, but I think I've only seen Prismacolors in sets.

so sorry about the late reply, but yes! All the markers i buy I buy I buy from dickblick.com, they have a huge marker selection where you can buy them individually, and they are the cheapest I have found markers anywhere else

what the actual fu-
I mean uh
I got a 48 pack of prismacolor markers for christmas but had no idea how to use them (as in the past - when I was a little kid - markers had always been super... wonky when drawing, at least, crayola ones are) and I find THIS
I will definitely refer to this in the future! Thank you!

thanks a lot for this, I wanted to start working with markers but I`m torn between copic and prisma, sense you`ve shown that one can make a stunning pic with this brand,( that and there more in my price range), I think all go with these, thanks again,

This is so cool I always wanted to do stuff with different textured paper and stuff! Your art is so beautiful! I need to go get textured paper now! Also-I have white gel pen too but my pen is small-if I need to draw huge white spots what do you use? Is there any like...paint marker or something?
I was wondering-if I did a commission like the picture you did of a persons OC and used textured paper would I be able to sell the commissions still? Or would it be considered not allowed since I used textured paper (since I didn't draw the textured paper I just cut it out and put it in the bg like you did)

How do you get the skin to look so smooth and blend/fade out!? Every time I try to use any kind of marker there are always lines where the marker overlaps, etc.
