Hehe, yeah... But he has a kind of friendly face, I think, so the feeling is not unexplainable.Ā

I'm not so into beards but I can't help but admire the leather armour he (or someone else) made - my fingers hurt just from looking at it!

But probably still cheap compared to what leather armour would have cost a norse warrior during the iron age. Leather was, I've read, much more expensive in those days - not to mention the cost of chain mail or byzantine-made scale/lamellar armour. Most scandinavian warriors probably had no other protection than a shield and a leather cap and had no fancier weapons than a spear and cheap knife. The happy few who could afford the whole shebang (leather+mail/lamellar+metal helmet+shield+frankish made sword+well made long knife or axe as secondary weapon) were the absolute elite.

I doubt leather was that expensive because it was readily available everywhere at that time. It only needed the labor to tan the things.

I did a search and found this on wikipedia: "Leather was far pricier during the period than today, and thus less affordable for the casual warrior."
However, there is no reference to reasearch on the subject, so... It may be as you say.

Quite interesting topic actually. I think the problem may be that there are very few leather finds from viking age when compared to bronze or iron for example. Jet everyone must have had boots in this climate...
