Description This was an experiment in color. I painted this all in a day, and it was quite an experience considering I've never painted this loosely before, and also on such a large canvas. I still consider it a work in progress. There are some things that don't quite read yet. I might do a whole series.

I would certainly support a full series. In fact, please do continue with this thread of thought, I'm very curious to see what this will evolve into. (I like the painting on its own and get a certain meaning from it. Though I see what you are saying about clarity of the message. Perhaps I just feel that way because of the more realistic styles of your other paintings. Maybe the feeling comes from a similar place for you. Just musing.)

anyhow, great concept. and I like the way the colors accentuate the emotion of the piece.

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D.(^oibyrd's daily devs) feature ! congrats!!!
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists with a fair amount of traffic to their work) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA. *PLZ DO KEEP IN MIND - some of the features are quite popular and obviously don't need extra help - however - I enjoy posting them because they inspire other artists. Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! Sandi xoxo

That's quite an improvement on the lighting and balance on that source photo - pretty impressive.

I particularly like the way that the reds and the greens play off one another. The looseness of your technique also keeps it fresh and exciting, so that your brush does a lot of the work without your analytical mind interfering and slowing you down.

This certainly would be an interesting series. I find myself curious to see how you develop the concept that you seem to be hinting at here.

I definitely think the color looks good. The various streaks on the wall work well. What is the significance of the shadow, or is that up to interpretation.

To me this painting has an emotional content that I find difficult to put into words. I guess the closest I could come to is this: I know from the experience of my life that there are certain things with higher intellectual and spiritual content, and these are the things that are solid and eternal, in an energetic sense. Yet always in the back of my mind is a coital instinct that I can't rid myself of. I'm engaged, and happily so, but when I go to shows or just out in public in general, I am filled clenching urge when I see an attractive body. I know these thoughts are insubstantial next to higher persuits of the mind and soul, but they haunt me (and everyone else) all the same.

Tell me about it. That's a very interesting concept, difficult to convey visually, and I like the way you tried to express it in your painting. I think art looks better when there's a deep idea behind it.

wow you are very talented. it seems like a very good style for you to move into. not many artists can paint in a loose, yet controlled manner. i always find it hard to know when to stop. you have retained the freshness in the paint. lovely work!

I love it when your stuff pops up in my watch!

Beautiful work, yet again! I'm enjoying these loose strokes. I can never bring myself to do those! Haha.

I really prefer your painting to the photo. There's so much life here in the paint! Your painterly strokes make him dance; whereas the cold, harsh lighting of the photo remind me of stasis.

And I concur with everything ~signedup said. haha. He's good!

You should try this one-day painting more often! The results may get really interesting!

I'd probably get more out of it if I didn't work on such a large canvas though. Thanks for the kind words.

This is a truely fabulous painting, everything about it is perfect and all I can really say about it is I think the experiment succeeded.

I see it this way similar to cza24-9, this would be the part in the film were the man (an old widdowed Romanian who has let his gypsy way of life get lost behind him) is sorting out his old things by candlelight, and he picks up his old fiddle. We hear one short, whining note in his mind as he recalls how he used to play while his wife danced. He begins to play perfectly a gyspy song, as the shadowy figure of a woman dances on the wall. Could it be a trick of the light? Could it actually be a ghostly apparition telling the old man to go back to the gyspy ways...?

A+ to you.

Lovely work!
The shadows and the contrast between colors give a more appealing sense to the concept of the reality Vs distortion of the mind.

Maybe it shows your pervert sense of awareness, dunno, it seams like you reveal some of the beasts in the mind, yours or others.

cza24-9 [2006-06-30 22:05:11 +0000 UTC]

i like the concept, and the loose brushwork seems to kinda work for it, like...yeah, my interpretation is that he is either seeing a womans form in the violin which is a common comparasin of the contours, or he is remember when the violin was played and that has something to do with the shadows, either way, they are memories, or thoughts, and...after that long blurb, the brush-work works.

I wished my experiences on canvas came out half as good as yours!...
Color-wise it's a beautiful achievement. an interesting fusion between fauve and pop, with the bright saturated tones juxtaposed with almost violent contrasting of complementary colors, sort of spattered instead of meticulously brushed. you're on a curious track there...
Regarding the theme, i don't quite get it, but the feminine silhouette and the violin on the same composition reminds me of that famous Man Ray photograph. If the old man figure was a woman i would think that the shadow behind him was a projection of his intimate desires for youth, since the girl is dancing and he's just contemplating the the archetype of dance. It's puzzling... i allways enjoy being confronted with possibilities rather than being preached about certainties, this work does just that! thanks

A beautiful days work I'm not very good at long sustained pieces, I tend to get everything I want to say out in one big rush. This is gorgeous. Everything you need is here, the emotion and atmosphere and energy all make a strong vivid piece.
