— Relation Description —
Auraeum and Dawn Mother are good friends, one or the other often seeking the other out to share stories and experiences, or (or additionally) having conversations about various philosophical topics that may be brief or span for days. Though Dawn Mother is relatively new to the concept of fiction, she enjoys the stories Auraeum tells, and Auraeum is delighted as sparks of inspiration weave a story in her as well. Auraeum is always fascinated by what she has to say, whether she speaks of the ancient weight of all her years, of the stories she has witnessed in the world, of her own thoughts, or her own stories.
Dawn Mother is a tactile creature; Auraeum was unaccustomed to touch prior to their meeting, but has come to enjoy Dawn Mother climbing upon their form as they converse or travel together — though she often moves at a much slower pace due to her lack of preference for levitation and teleportation. Auraeum will sometimes shift in size to explore alongside her or even climb upon her themself. It is not uncommon for Auraeum to extend a limb to invite Dawn Mother to clamber onto their form, though as both are eternal spirits, Auraeum does not mind taking a more meandering path closer to the Earth when they feel it is suitable.

Both Auraeum and Dawn Mother are well-traveled, enjoying listening to tales and seeking them out. Dawn Mother heard of Auraeum first—she was told of Auraeum's Gilded Library within the Conservatory and she went to look for it herself. She is a stranger to the developed biome, having existed long before any traces of human settlement, but she admires the strange geometric beauty of these concrete and stone worlds. She had heard of this library from another, a collection of information stored all readily in one place that tells of the past, stories of reality and stories of fiction, guarded by a mysterious solitary being. She did not understand how exactly it worked, uncertain of written language and those big strange pieces of leather-bound paper, that somehow held the knowledge of distant ages past. She entered, hoping to learn more, and perhaps that is where she first met Auraeum. She asked about the library, who they were, what they came from, and how this strange place worked.
Auraeum, of course, was intrigued by Dawn Mother. "I am Auraeum," they said. "I was once a sculpture of a tree cast in gold, transformed into a thinking by the one known as X not too long ago in the chronology of Earth. As for this library… Each book here represents a story I have learned or made, including variations of the same story. Though... perhaps it is strange — I cannot grasp the written word, nor can any of our kind, but I can understand the essence of the stories humans and others have recorded, and weave my own tales to convey the soul of their narrative. Time distorts narratives, but here in this library I can remember the tales they once were, and how they transformed over time... then if such is desired, I can speak of these tales." And they then expressed their own curiosity of her: "Tell me of your story, that I might live an echo of it through the lens of you. What has it meant to exist as you through the years you have lived?"
Dawn Mother answered any questions Auraeum had of her, and her answer to that one in particular: "My existence was wrought from that early forest wanderer — Ikkit, he is called. He was different then from what he is now. When he first turned me into this spirit of the Earth, I was angry, unruly, violent, even. Not an echo of that resentment exists anymore. That's what time does to you — it changes you in ways you would never expect. I have been bitter, I have been selfish, I have been calm, I have been kind, I have been furious, I have been loving, I have been changed. Sometimes time moves as slow as a glacier, sometimes faster than a swollen river, but still it marches onwards. I remember seeing the last of my kind, exhausted and hungry. I remember seeing the first humans build their homes of mud and stones. I have been called many names in my past, and I suspect I will be called many more."
The two learned much of each other in that first conversation, and Dawn Mother was especially interested in hearing fiction, as that is a concept relatively new to her. Her old, original form, as a prey animal, was never concerned with telling "false" tales. As an esk, she still did not understand their value until recently. Her whole lifetime as an esk was spent collecting real experiences and learning facts, and fiction presented an opportunity to learn something more.
And so Auraeum answered her curiosity, telling her first a simple tale, and then speaking of their own musing thoughts on the value of fiction: "A singular existence is so limited, yet imagination is boundless. Imagine, then, you were someone else. Something else. Living a different life, perhaps in a different world. Perhaps experiencing a pain you could not comprehend, or enjoying life in a different way. With fiction, we can see countless worlds through countless eyes, transform ourselves and find ourselves in ways unbound by the rules of our own existence. One begins to understand. One begins to appreciate what is, and what is not. For me, doing so has helped me better understand my own being, to explore the limits of what I could be, and what I want to be."
To that, Dawn Mother's curiosity of Auraeum's original form was sparked, and she asked, "Both of us, strange in our forms as abnormals, but I was born from life and you from nonlife, neither one greater than the other but our experiences are different. How did you handle this? Sudden sentience, I think the word is? The ability to perceive, that ability to feel and think. You say your tales helped you understand yourself, understand choice and life. Even sometimes I am lost in thought of how consciousness works. What about you?"
"It was quite strange, yes. An object does not think, yet at that moment, I suddenly had capacity for thought and language. At first I was a blank and empty thing, but did not know it — it is good that my power allowed me to understand the stories beyond me, that I might feel out the shape of my being. Beings born of life gain cognizance slowly, and understanding comes with it naturally — while I had sudden thought and understanding came later. Perhaps, in the end, the nature of consciousness is similar — seeking knowledge, understanding, and connection to something, be it an abstract thing, a location, or another soul. As for how it works... I do wonder, myself. I have come across many a story about an artificial mind, and texts touching on intersections of consciousness and philosophy - perhaps we are all programs, machines, echoing signals in our being to form something of coherence. Perhaps there is an essence within us that cannot truly be grasped or understood, a soul within beyond the limits of what is observable. It is curious to think about, isn't it?"
This was the beginning of a friendship of many philosophical conversations that would come with the two of them. Auraeum muses often on themes such as reality and fiction, existence, identity, and purpose; Dawn Mother enjoys contemplating themes of identity and purpose as well, in addition to the meaning of life and the constant flow of time and change. Together, they could get caught up for hours, even days, just discussing thoughts and ideas. They parted in time but came to visit each other with some frequency; Auraeum often looks forward to their conversations.
