Oh no, that was on purpose. If I could draw dragons well I would draw him full-grown as I imagine him. His neck lengthens a little, the soft bumps along his crown and spine grow and sharpen… he gets more traditionally draconic looking when he's fully mature.
By reference do you mean the other character? That's Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons and true heir to the throne in Westros. It's all from the A Song of Ice and Fire series (better known as Game of Thrones to most people). I love the idea of her and Hiccup joining forces.

I FREAKING love Dany anyhooo and then you pull this and I'm like melting and sobbing and it's so beautiful... and I'll actually comment in a day or to on the art and the idea behind it-- so much as just the IDEA of shipping Hiccup and Dany is still melting my heart.
I've never shipped anyone like I'm starting to ship Hiccup/Dany... like WOW. I almost never ship... and now I've fallen SO hard for this ship in 10 seconds. You're so talented and genius!!

Dany is really awesome, isn't she? This was my first time ever trying to draw her so I'm kind of feeling 'meh' about how she came out, but I still really love the idea behind this all. The dragon whisperer and the mother of dragons. It's perfect because as Dany's 'children' get older, they get more and more out of control. She needs a trainer on hand.

Oh gosh yes! Dany is the only reason I'm still watching it. It's such a grim, sad series... And it's almost too much-- I was almost sick once time when someone died. And I'm not squimish either. But I'm so curious about what happens to Dany <3 Her children get more out of control? Interesting!! I'm intrigued now!!
