I think what I hate most is that you tend to have to fight the same type over and over too often so you never get a real opportunity to train all your Pokemon at once.

No. You have an open spot in your party and put him at the head of your party so he's following you then you take him to the Celebi Shrine in the Ilex Forest. Press the A button against the shrine and the Spikey-Eared Pichu will run out from behind it and she will automatically want to join your team. She's lv 30 and knows Helping Hand, Volt Tackle, Swagger, and Pain Split. She also holds a Zap Plate.
