Maybe the turtle has rescued a runaway banana, and wants to keep it safe as he attempts to return it to its rightful owner, and is forlorn due to the magnitude of sorting out which tree to bring it to, and he wonders how anyone could let such a sweet and adorable banana out of their sight for more than five minutes, and all this reminds him of his own childhood in a broken shell, unloved and saddened...

I sincerely doubt that the turtle being forlorn has anything to do with the banana. They're probably BOTH forlorn, but bananas don't have good facial expressions. Or faces, for that matter.

he's so very smart to have thought of putting his banana on a string. i wish i would have done that, i would still have my banana. such a clever bastard he is! when i get a pet turtle, i want it to be just like him!

Once upon a time there was a turtle who lived in a house, which he found to be quite redundant since he already had a natural portable home. The only saving grace of this exterior home was the banana tree in the yard, which had been there since before he had moved in, which itself was a very long time ago.
One day, as chance would have it in fairy tales, a terribly fire swept through the neighbourhood, incinerating all in its path. Said turtle's house was no exception, though by yet another twist of fate, a mighty wind blew up just before the fire reached him.
Surveying the damage in the aftermath (yes, the wind put out the fire), the turtle realized that all he had left was his shell, a banana, and some papers from his housing insurer which he had stored in his 'special place', in case of an emergency like so.
Of course, as things go though, the papers revealed that he did not, in fact, have coverage against fire, which was considered to be an act of god (a presumably wrathful one), and thus was left without house or money, with a single banana to keep him company.
The turtle was quite upset (hence picture) for a few days, then came to his senses and realized he was probably better off without the silly house anyway, and that he as a turtle really had no use for money. He ate the banana, was happy for a bit, then was promptly eaten himself by a migrating swallow (the carnivorous african kind).
(Note: Where I get this shit from I don't know, I think it comes from painting in an enclosed room for prolongued periods of time...)
