Description Hundreds of years ago, Buddhas were carved by artisans in the sides of mountains in Da Zu as part of a spiritual cultivation of China over 1000 years ago. Many still exist but are the targets of vandals seeking profit. The heads of Buddha are stolen from temples and sites all over China to be sold in the underground markets for huge sums of money. Many sites, such as this, have been defiled by thieves but people are fighting to keep their sacred objects safe for future generations. Its a very uneasy feeling seeing a 1000+ year old Buddha with no head because someone cut it off.

For the record, none of the artifacts in Da Zu were damaged during the cultural revolution (when many antiques of ancient China were destroyed).

There were guards and signs everywhere that said that you cant take photos around here but that never stoped me, this place was in a cave like thing behind another wall of buddhas, which is why all the heads besides one were stolen. I didnt want to get that thing in the right top of the frame but it couldnt be helped if I was going to take a nice photo of all the statues.

Canon 20D, Canon 17-40mm L f/4 Lens, 1/8 sec, f/4, ISO 3200 (I shot this handheld, a big no no)

That's so sad, the way folks will just destroy centuries old artifacts and relics for their own wants. :< It's sad how people are willing to obliterate pieces of history just so they can own their own personal piece of it.

hehehe. The guards told me not to take any photos too. I took some when they weren't looking, but the pics were too rushed to be any good.

I like how you put background info for all of your photos.

1000+ year-old is pretty impressive! Those thieves are absolute scumbags!

Very well-structured photo by the way. You must have very stable arms for this 1/8 sec shot.

By the way, do you mean "There were guards and signs everywhere that said that you can not take photos around here" rather than "you can"?

Beautiful shot.

It's not just the vandals that are at fault, it's the people who want artifacts like that. Mainly westerners. It's a terrible thing really.

I guess all they can do is perhaps carve more heads to replace them. All I know is Buddha isn't mad.

funny you say that because today another american guy over here and I were watching this old old OLD chinese cartoon and it was a story about a guy who finds a spirit living in a plate and then there is this foriegner that is taking all sorts of artifacts from china and all the chinese people are complaining and he tries to take the plate and the spirit comes out and woops on the foriegn guy

You know what? I'm sure I'm not the only one who really appreciates your big descriptions about how each photo fits into Chinese culture overall. Thank you for taking the trouble.

Excellent. You caught the tonal graduation, texture, composition, power in bw and perspective all beautifully. The stuff in the top right only serves to give it the raw imperfect feel that the shot possesses because of the missing heads. Great title too, I absolutely love this hen hao

beautifully done... love the angle..
the light, the hard black strip up top..
it's all so nicely done.

it's very odd to see all the heads
gone except one! what an almost
menacing sight - quite powerful!

thanks it was almost too perfect of a shot, the lighting, the tones, the way that there happened to only be one head left right where the best place for me to take the photo was.....good times
