Description Concept design for my new series of 'symbionts' comprised of plant/animal hybrids. This one is meant to be a desert god hybrid between the sheep (ovis aries) and the desert plant welwitschia (welwitschia mirabilis).

Ovis mirabilis : The animal portion of this symbiont follows the basic anatomical structure of a sheep with one or more welwitschia plants growing from its head/along  the neck. The plants can grow longer than the height of the sheep and will trail along the ground but since this species is sure-footed, they rarely steps on the leaves. Each plant only grows two true leaves which can split multiple times and often turn brown/die out at the ends.

Lambs are born without plants and a 'soft' boneless area at the crown of their skull. Shortly after birth, the mother will deposit seeds from her own plant onto her lamb's head. Hormonal regulation by the lamb allows only plants of the same gender to grow from their animal symbiont. The root system engrains into the animal's brain and grows alongside the nervous system. Animal waste products rich in nitrogen and other nutrients are directed to the plant and sugars from photosynthesis are provided to the animal although cannot sustain it completely - this species must still consume other plants to survive.

I love your drawings, I love your concepts, I love you biological deductions and explanations... I wish I could draw like you. So many ideas inside my mind.

Thank you! Haha, I know the feeling. . Only very few of my ideas actually make it into artwork and they are still lacking compared to what I imagine in my mind. But I have always thought that the process of making these creatures and thinking about their biology is the most important part, doesn't really matter what the final piece or sketch page looks like so long as I got the chance to think and learn about something as I was making it c:

Totally agree with you. Plus, successing at explaining such an imaginary creature is so satisfying... it's like " C'mon, the only thing I need to make this real is genetic engineering and hybridation!" (just kidding). Keep up the good work!

Haha, exactly c:
I'm hoping to go more in depth with a few of these designs once I start taking biochemistry this coming year, should be fun and challenging!
And thank you for commenting btw, I always appreciate it :3

At first, I love this creature concept and hope to see more if it in the future!
Secondly, I adore the layout you're having here, all the sketches and handwritten texts look really authentic and professional!

Thank you! I likely won't be doing too much more art of this particular concept, but I will be working on a whole series of plant/animal hybrid symbionts. But this one is one of my favorites out of the designs so far (since Welwitschia is my favorite plant), so perhaps a full piece is due C:

Well, what ever you decide to do - post the whole series of symbionts or draw full art pieces of them - I will follow this project with interest!

Ohhh, my gosh!

Can you please upload more sketch pages like this and concepts? I get so excited and inspired seeing these, and I loved reading the species concept of them, too!

Thanks! And for sure, I can upload a few of my favorites as they come. Since these symbionts are a new idea I only have this one page - but I plan to fill up a bunch of sketch pages with their character designs in the future! I've been going to the greenhouse conservatory on our college campus for inspiration. I absolutely love sitting and studying the plants there.

Most of my sketchbook is just notes for biology and organic chemistry though

That is a really good idea, I need to find some place like your greenhouse to get a lot of inspiration. Finding photos online is nice, but it doesn't quite capture the sensation of just being there, you know?
But yeah, I think you have some really awesome stuff. It makes me want to practice hooved animals just because I could use the experience. XD

Yeah, my school is all about animals and agriculture, so I have tons of places to go and look at plants/animals and get inspiration! And I know exactly what you mean - seeing something right in front of you and being able to observe the way it sounds or moves or even feels is completely different from online images.

Yes, hooved animals are great <3

I used to be so obsessed with canids, but I have realized that every single animal and plant has something awesome to offer and the more I understand about them, the more information I have to base character designs off of/bring something imaginary as close to reality as possible. The world is just too amazing C:

You're so lucky! That's why I want to take more trips to the zoo and whatnot, but it's a bit out of the way and it's more convenient to take photos of things. I'm planning on going to the aquarium in the next month or so, so maybe I could get some gesturals or something done while I'm there!

Yeah, I used to love canines as well, but I sort of became burnt out on them. Now I just feel really gross drawing them, because they're just not interesting to me anymore. But I agree with you, I LOVE drawing inspiration from a variety of animals and plants!

awaicu In reply to SushiGryphon [2014-03-03 10:09:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. . The animal community on DA seems very centralized on canids. I still love them, of course, but I want my art to capture as many different species as possible so that I can research and learn about them! The most exciting part of these new symbiont pieces I am working on is the research and trying to figure out how these 'species' would survive and function in the ecosystem. I learn quite a bit about real animals and plants as I go!

OOh, and if you draw anything on your aquarium trip, I would love to see it if you care to post! C:
