Description Here's a new pic of the hero formerly known as Vesuvius. Since Image Comics has a character named Vesuvius in a book they publish, in order to avoid any potential unpleasantness down the road, I've renamed my guy. I also noticed that I've yet to post any background on my tectonic titan, so I'll take care of that right now.

Richard Mantle was a professional outdoorsman who retired from the life of a hunting guide to work with international aid charities like the Red Cross, the Peace Corps and others. During a mission in South America his group fell under assault by communist revolutionaries. Fleeing for their lives, the aid workers stumbled into a mountain cave. Trapped with no way out, they expected the armed men to burst in any moment and gun them down. Before such an event could occur the cave floor gave way where Richard was standing and he plummeted into darkness.

How long Richard remained unconscious he couldn't be certain, but when he awakened, he found himself prostrate in a pool of viscous goop and paralyzed. He imagined that would be the end of him, he would starve or succumb to the elements and perish and his body would never be found. He was right about one thing...Richard's body would never be seen again. As he lay there he felt a burning sensation in his flesh as the soupy mud soaked into his pores. Finally, when the pain became too great, he passed out.

He awakened again, only this time he could move, and somehow he could see in the dark cavern. He stood, desiring nothing more than to escape the darkness and get to the cave above to check on his comrades. Instantly the earth beneath his feet began to raise up and the mound thrust him back into the cave. The cave was empty. His fellow aid workers were nowhere to be seen dead or alive.

In the light, he was able to take a better look at himself to check for injury and he was shocked when he looked at his body. Somehow he'd changed. Gone was the human body of flesh and blood and in its place stood a monstrous form, seemingly made of pure basalt, with glowing rivulets of magma coursing through crevices in his structure. Richard didn't have time to question what had happened to him. He was fairly certain the armed guerrillas had abducted his co-workers and planned to ransom them back to their families. Once they discovered the families weren't wealthy...then the killing would start.

Using his hunter's skills, he tracked the rebels to their camp. On the way, he had played a bit with his new form and was astounded at the physical power. He was determined to use that power to save his comrades. At night, he attacked. His new body proved to be invulnerable to the rebels assault weapons and grenades and he set them to flight in short order. That was the first battle of Richard's career as a super-hero, but it would be far from his last.

Settling on the codename Krakatoa because it sounded suitably dramatic, Richard has embarked on a life of crimefighting.

Krakatoa is one of the physically most powerful and durable heroes around, able to lift over 200 tons of weight. He can also soak an amazing amount of damage, his body being far tougher and more resilient than actual stone. he stands over 7 feet tall and weighs over two tons. On top of his physical abilities, Krakatoa has a number of exotic powers related to earth and volcanos in particular. He can spew clouds of volcanic ash, obscuring sight around him. He can cause earth tremors and is geo-kinetic. He can fire torrents of magma from his hands at will. He also possesses the ability to accurately detect movement via vibrations through solid surfaces, can see in near absolute darkness and can tunnel through the earth and stone at a rapid pace. He rarely uses his tunneling ability in settled areas since it wreaks havoc on underground utilities.

Very nice Hero design.

Does he have trouble if he is away from the ground for long periods? Flight, space etc?

Yeah, it's a bit punny wordplay on the movie "Krakatoa, East of Java".

Waitaminnit... Richard Mantle... South America... Where's the Indonesia connection?

In my stories he gets asked that often. Originally he was asked about that lack of any connections to Greece, but his answer remains the same: "It just sounds cool, 'kay? It ain't MY fault there ain't no cool sounding volcanos in the US."

And before you...or anyone else...susses it out; yes his name is Rocky Mantle. I thought it was funny.

I've never claimed my sense of humor would provoke anything more than .

The 'Rocky' thing was going to be my next question. or "DOCTOR SCOTT!"

And really, if there's no room for goofy jokes in comics where could there possibly be? The 'because it sounds cool' name sort of lends itself to the balls-out 'because that's what heroes do' Silver Age mentality.

Does he hang out with Savage?

Oh yeah...Krakatoa is all about the bad humor and balls out action. A deep thinker he is not. In a story I'm currently storyboarding, he actually interrupts a villainous monologue with: "Blah, blah, blah. I really don't care about your evil plan. I'm just here to fight...comprende'?"
