Elves in the Shifting Horizons Campaign Setting are culturally analogous to the white land-owning aristocracy of the United States, particularly southern slave owners. The recent generations have turned a traditional view of stewardship of the land into a notion of manifest destiny and the right to own and control land and life. A rare few good souls go against this view, taking up the causes of life and liberty while remaining patriotic, dreaming of the possibility that their new homeland can be as noble as it claims....

Lysny spent some 75 years of her adult life confined to the second floor of her family home, her father convinced by a well-meaning but ignorant physician that his daughter's rebelliousness was due to overexposure to stressful environments and excessive stimulation from attempted reading. As such, books-- and nearly all interaction with outsiders --were forbidden the young elf, and decades were spent nursing an illiterate rage at the world. A fire gave her the chance to slip into the woods amidst commotion and clamor, and to seek a world without walls....

Lysny was inspired by the feminist writing of the late Nineteenth century, particularly works like the Yellow Wallpaper, as well as Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. She's a smart young (elf) woman who has had to deal with the prejudices and misconceptions of her time, and as a consequence has wound up with a lack of formal and social education that makes her seem less civilized and canny than she is on the inside. She's the iconic incarnation of everyone who was told their way of acting or thinking was wrong, and who managed to escape that.
