Description
An M440 Mastiff on display, callsign 'Cujo-1,' circa 2548. This particular vehicle belongs to the 15th Armored Regiment (the 'Baloch') of the UNSC Army's 42nd Armored Division, based out of Meridian. The 42nd Armored was one of the oldest armored divisions within the UNSC, having been formed from three Pakistan Army armored regiments (the 13th, 14th, and 15th Lancers) during the Interplanetary War. The unit would be ultimately wiped out in the 3-year-long Battle of Meridian, suffering nearly 90% casualties and spending the rest of the war recuperating on Lodestone. The division's Mastiffs, along with the three other armored divisions present on Meridian at the time, were credited with containing a number of Covenant ground incursions during the opening months of the campaign, helping stall the Covenant ground assault long enough for friendly forces to close in and neutralize the landing zones before the Covenant could solidify their hold. Though built on an M850 Grizzly chassis, the Mastiff doesn't have the same level of armor protection as the MBT, given that it is a support vehicle as opposed to a frontline combat vehicle. Despite the reduced weight, the Mastiff is still a large and cumbersome vehicle to transport efficiently, as well as costly in production costs for an artillery unit. Despite its distinguish service record, many within the UNSC Procurement department are considering discontinuing the Mastiff in favor of the more easily transportable and cost friendly Kodiak. However, pushback from the UNSC Army has prevented this from happening, especially in the wake of the M850B Grizzly being announced as the new standard Main Battle Tank of the UNSC.
