Description Jade bit her lip as the younger girl leant into her on the couch, smelling of motor oil, soaps and burnt metal. She was doing that thing, the thing where she snuggled up close, so close that there wasn't anywhere else on the couch to go, and then leant on her shoulder. She pulled her arm up; it had slipped down behind them both and she didn't want to be accused of holding her butt.  In the corner of the room, she could see the adorable little multi-coloured bag that Leura took to school – and it was high school.

Her eyes traversed the television screen and fell to the coffee table, where they'd left their plates and half-full mugs of hot cocoa. She'd been left with Leura for a long time, like this. It was how they ended all their Friday nights. Together. Always together. Her hand grasped Jade's knee and she gave a little wince because her stomach suddenly felt like it was full of helium. She returned the gesture by easing her fingers intimately under the hem of her shirt.

They watched TV like that for a few moments more, and with each passing second, they grew closer and closer. Leura's hand on her thigh, Jade's head tilted inwards to rest against hers, their stomachs tightened and hearts tentatively stuttered at every minute turn. They were watching TV, still, of course, but it was the terrible closeness that she had come to despise over time because it felt so teasing and fleeting. It was at moments like this, when Leura was silent and their minds had been dulled by the day past that she finally felt like they could communicate on the same level. They could be intimate without ushering analysts, they could hug and rest together without risk of Leura being suddenly called away to work on something. They could be together, finally, without the distractions of the world around them. It was in these moments that Jade really felt like she was living, and that Leura had finally stopped being the weird, smart, abnormal little girl that she was, and they could just be there.

So often those moments passed her by, and afterwards she only felt anger. Every time this happened, she hated it because she knew it would end soon. It would end, and Leura would revert to her wacky old self.

Adrenaline rushed through her system as she contemplated acting – she would have to. Anything would be better than the usual aftermath, wouldn't it?

So she acted. With one hand she reached up and turned Leura's head by the cheek so that she faced her. She could already see the confusion, the fear in her eyes. But she could not succumb and back down. Not anymore. Jade eased herself down, and quite simply pressed their lips together. Leura was warm and soft even on the lips, it seemed.

She hoped she wouldn't stop their kiss to talk. That would be just like her.
